J U D G E S S T A N D B CHARLES HATTON LOUISVILLE Ky May 5 Per ¬ haps nothing will come of it but there is a suggestion that the three clubs which sponsor the American Triple Crown events form a pool of 5000 each to donate a suitable trophy for winners of all three races UD to now seven colts have manaeed to sweep successfully through the Derby Preakness and Belmont The first was Sir Barton who was incidentally a maiden when he started in the 1919 Derby The others are Gallant Fox in 1930 Omaha in 35 War Admiral 37 Whirlaway 41 Count Fleet 43 and Assault in 46 Pre ¬ vious to last weekends Derby Warren Wright remarked that he would like fo win the Triple Crown if one of his colts won here This suggests that Citation and Coaltown may have run together for the first and last time in many days Calumet this spring is in Its usual fortuitous position of having a sort of ace in the hole for the threeyearold events if Citation and Coaltown should go off form This is of course Free America The Joneses have not felt any need of him thus far but will doubtless commence his training in all serious ¬ ness if it seems the prudent thing after the Preakness or Belmont BelmontA A A A AA A group of horsemen were discussing the New York season on the backstretch at Churchill Downs here re ¬ cently Eddie Christmas of the W L Brann string gave it as his opinion that It is the toughest competitioa any ¬ where from early Aprif until November Unless one has a standout performer they wring out his horse each time he runs I think Assault must have been a remark ¬ able horse to race as he did with fresh horses coming trom all directions At this point jockey Arnold Kirk American Triple Crow77 Trophy Suggested N Y Competition Toughest Throughout Year Black Tarquin Very Much in Epsom Derby Torchator Nimble Maryland TyoYearOld land who frequently rode against Assault said that When he moved the topsoil spurted out from beneath him like a highpowered car getting the green light This observer doesnt think that competition is keener anywhere than it is at Arlington and Washington during the Chicago summer season but Christmas was speaking of the entire year California form often is said to be of questionable caliber but the Native Sons did send one first rate homebred east a year ago in On Trust A A A AWilliam William Woodwards hopes of winning a third American Triple Crown were dashed when Whirling Fox failed to train satisfactorily but the New York Jockey Club chairmans Black Tarquin still is a prominent eligible for the worldfamed Epsom Derby on June 5 It seems he suffered a slight injury which kept him out of the 2000 Guineas Naturally there will be rejoicing in America and particularly at the nearby village of Paris if this produce of the Claiborne Farm wins the Epsom Classic There is also pretty sure to be a sugges ¬ tion that Black Tarquin come here to meet the Kentucky Derby winner but one wonders if the master of Belair would be really keen about such venture and Wanen Wright has said that he isnt interested in racing horses abroad An English friend who has seen Black Tarquin race and has witnessed many Epsom Derby renewals tells us that Black Tarquin is atleast big enough to get the mile and a half You know it takes a true stayer to win our Derby In fact I think that Airborne won simply because he was the only distance horse in the field for his Derby We shall know more of Black Tarquins status within the next two weeks weeksA A A A AMaryland Maryland racing each spring develops at least one twoyearold of promise as it did in the recordbreaking Saggy a year ago Guy BedwelFs Torchator seems to be the quickest of those seen in the Free State this spring He accounted for the Kindergarten back at Bowie The Maryland horseman bought Torchator from Walter McCarty on the West Coast where he won three purses before he came east He seems to have been well bought a a reported sum of 20000 Pimlico has decided not to offer any twoyearold stakes this spring for reasons which escape us The only twoyearold feature at the Hilltop meet is an affair for Marylandbreds It is a little bit ironical that Torchator is a Californiabred and cannpt compete Thus the son of Lassator may be idie for a time However the veteran horseman can con ¬ sole himself with the premise that as a result Torchator will surely develop into a formidable candidate for the 1949 Pimlico Cup A A A ATurfiana Turfiana W L Brann has promising twoyearold brothers to Challedon and Pictor in his New York string this year Mrs Warren Wright was an interested observer when the Calumet Derby entrants were saddled looking very modish indeed in a Devils red gown and blue hat The 2000 Guineas winner has the American taint through his French sire Djebel Oldest track records at the Downs belong to Ten Brdeck who set three and four mile marks against time in 1876 The sur ¬ face this season is a trifle cuppy Walter Curd who manages Ray Ankerbauers Woodford County farm used to ride for Diamond Jim Brady
