Salmagundi to Pass Up Preakness Cornish Knight Outsprints Buzfuz Rain Off Track Cause Withdrawal WithdrawalExpect Expect Win Wagering Only With but Three Likely to Face Citation at Pimlico PimlicoPIMLICO PIMLICO Baltimore MdMay 13 Wil ¬ liam Helis Salmagundi will not be shipped to Pimlico for Saturdays running of the Preakness it was learned here late today reducing the probable field for the second leg of the Triple Crown to four horses Salmagundis deflection from the race is i direct consequence of the overnight rain which converted the Pimlico racing strip into a sea of slop slopWord Word that Salmagundi would not be among those present in the Preakness line up was received from Garden State Park where Joe Loper general manager of Helis Jobstown Farm made the announcement Earlier in the day ifc hdd been assumed that Salmagundi winner of the 100000 Santa Anita Derby was on his way here and he was expected to have been checked in and bedded down in his stall about 3 p m mSalmagundis Salmagundis best races nave been run on a fast track but inasmuch as other sons and daughters of Hash have proved capable in all types of going it was thought Sal ¬ magundi also would give a good account of himself even if the track weredeep for the Preakness Yesterdays news that Salma ¬ gundi would be shipped here following a brilliant sixfurlors score at Garden State Park plus ak one mile and a furlong on out work had been welcomed in all quar ¬ ters for his presence would have addf d con ¬ siderable strength to the Preakness field fieldAid Aid to Bovards Chances ChancesHowever However the very off track which caused Salmagundis withdrawal has sky ¬ rocketed the hopes of Marylanders that the homebred Bovard owned by Sylvester W Labrot of Annapolis would now prove a stouter adversary for the prohibitive favor ¬ ite Citation Bovard a son of Bahram and Knights Nurse is known to step up in off footing and trainer Jimmy Rowan revealed this morning that Bovard was in better shape than ever before He sustained a slight injury in the Chesapeake Stakes in which he was second to Citation and he won the Louisiana Derby beating Shy Guy on a good track The rains so elevated the confidence of trainer Rowan ht Bovard wouldbe as close to Citation as he ever would in his life that he phoned Labrot in New Orleans and advised the sportsman to come on to Baltimore Labrot previously had not con ¬ templated making the trip He answered that he would take a train at once and will arrive in Baltimore Saturday morning morningThe The actual condition of the track on Saturday is pretty much of a guess at the Continued on Page Three x xSalmagundi Salmagundi to Pass Up Engagement in Preakness PreaknessRain Rain OH Track Bring About Withdrawal Four Probables Left LeftContinued Continued trom Page One Onemoment moment The track had been thoroughly rolled by a seventon tractor during the three fast track days which prevailed here in the belief that if rains should come the tamping would serve to drain the strip faster The rains came last night and this afternoon the weather continued cloudy with occasional showers showersIf If no more rain falls between now and post time for the Preakness the track could well be fast but if showers continue the strip definitely will be off The only other Marylandbred to win the Free States most famous race was William L Branns Challedon who won on a slushy track However if the rains lifted the hopes of Bovard neither did it do anything to dis ¬ courage the Calumet Farms trainer H A Jimmy Jones Citation has proved his ability to run on most any kind of a race course winning the Kentucky Derby in slop But more important Citation has proven that he likes the particular kind of slush or mud which might prevail at Pim ¬ lico for he won the Pimlico Futurity here last year with the water flying from under his hooves The forecast for tomorrow is for partly cloudy and somewhat cooler but the weatherman did not venture a guess as to whether the clouds would bring showers showersBetter Better Self on Track TrackKing King Ranchs Better Self was the only Preakness contender to work this morning Trainer Max Hirsch was here from New York to watch the trial along with his son W J Buddy Hirsch With Warren Mehrtens who will ride him in the Preak ¬ ness Better Self slogged along a mile and la quarter in 215 Late fractions included the mile and an eighth in 20215 the mile in 149 and the seven furlongs in 137 Prior to the seven furlongs fractional times were not taken as the colt was doing little better than briskly galloping gallopingA A change in riders on Vulcans Forge was the big news at the barn of C V Whit ¬ ney Trainer Sylvester Veitch now in New York had hoped to ride Jonnny Gilbert in the Preakness But Gilbert is engaged for the opening day program at Hollywood Park on Tuesday and not wishing to fly will leave New York for the West Coast on Saturday by train trainThe The Maryland Jockey Club management went right ahead with preparations to en ¬ tertain a capacity crowd on Preakness Day regardless of the weather The infield pari mutuels will be opened and post time will be advanced for the first race from the usual 215 p m to 2 p m eastern day ¬ light time and the Daily Double as per schedule will close 15 minutes prior to that or at 145 p m Preakness post is 515 oclock oclockTo To make sure that programs are avail ¬ able early and for every one scratch time for the Saturday program has been set at 5 p m on Friday evening and at which time all riders must be assigned assignedNo No announced is expected from either the Maryland Jockey Club or the Maryland State Racing Commission who will confer tomorrow after the entries close as to probable wagering conditions on the Preak ¬ ness It would appear a foregoneyconclu sion that there wfrl be no show wagering but whether place wagering is offered re ¬ mains to be seen The weight jof public opinion here seems to be that the com ¬ mission would act in the best interests of Maryland racing and Maryland state rev ¬ enue if straight wagering only were offered inasmuch as the state stands to lose along with the track on any minus pools which probably would develop beyond straight wagering
