BETWEEN RACES By OSCAR OTIS PIMLICO Baltimore Md May 13 Anno Domini 1948 will go down in the archives of the Maryland Jockey Club as the year of the great archeological discovery i e the un ¬ covering of 15 missing runnings of the Preakness The Maryland Jockey Club which dates into antiauity is quite justly proud of its rich traditions and there are on file such items as a letter from Andrew Jackson dated Washington City 1831 considering it an honor for him to be elected to membership and records to show that as long ago as 1830 the Maryland Club memorialized other jockey clubs to join with it in standardizing the various tracks to one mile measured three feet out from Jhe rubbing rail But the gap in the Preakness Stakes could never be fathomed Dave Woods the Pimlico good ¬ will man stumbled onto the missing Preakness runnings and quite by chance He was cleaning up some rubble frpra a musty vault and discovered a reference to a Treakness on a nohexistant date or at least nonexistant on the official records Woods realized he had stumbled onto something of consequence rushed over o the officer of Humphrey Finney where the Maryland Horse authority keeps one of the finest turf research libaries in the world Woods and Finney quickly obtained confirma tion of the Preakness series transferred to Gravesend There are still four missing however and after the rush of Preakness week is over the digging for the missing links 189093 inclusive will be resumed with typical Free State zeal It seems that1 all this time the Maryland Jockey Club had in its employ a man who knew ailabout it but just never thought to mention it This is Willie Davis a patrol judge for the Maryland club Davis merely rode Cairngorn in the 1905 i Preakness at trie course of the Brooklyn Jockey Club It was an autHenfic Preakness says Davis The man was there arid should know An eye witness to bolster the archieves was an unparalleled stroke of good fortune for the Maryland people r A A
