Col Edward G Schleider Succumbs at Age of 95 95Was Was Identified With Movement Reviving Orleans Sport in 1915 1915NEW NEW ORLEANS La May 13 Col Ed ¬ ward G Schleider businessman philan ¬ thropist and sportsman died here Wednes ¬ day night in Baptist Hospital where he had been a resident for the past six years be ¬ cause of a serious heart ailment The de ¬ ceased was In his 95th year and a native of Louisville Ky coming to New Orleans in his youth and entered the long tobacco business eventually engaging in numerous other enterprises before his retirement several years ago agoWhen When the businessmens racing associa ¬ tion was formed for the purpose of reviving racing at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans in 1915 Colonel Schleider was prominently identified with the movement and 10 years later associated with the late Col E R Bradley Col John P Sullivan and Barry Shannon acquired control of the Fair Grounds GroundsAfter After acquisition of the controlling stock in the Businessmens Racing Association the Louisiana Jockey Club was organized with Colonel Schleider as president and it was during his regime thai the majority of the present improvements were affected at the Fair Grounds After the sale of the Fair Grounds to Roberts Eddy Jr and Joseph Cattarinich Colonel Schleider was no longer identified with the thoroughbred sport
