Earl Sande Released on Drug Violation Charge ChargeGrand Grand Jury Returns No True Bill in Case of Forme Jockey JockeyNEW NEW YORK N Y May 13 Trainer Earl Sande was released today on charges that he had violated the federal narcotics laws when the federal grand jury in Brook ¬ lyn returned no true bill of indictment indictmentFollowing Following an investigation by the grand jury United State district attorney Vincent Keogh stated Today I presented to the grand jury of this district all of the governments evidence charging Earl Sande with violation of the federal narcotics i laws All witnesses in ¬ cluding Earl Sande testified The grand jury returned no true bill billSande Sande formerly one of racings oufastand Ing jockeys and wh6 owns and trains his own stable of horses was suspended for 60 days on May 4 by The Jockey Club for allegedly stimulating one of his horses Big Stage in a race at Jamaicapn April 21 21The The Jockey Clubs move followed an in ¬ vestigation by the Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau an affiliate of the Thor ¬ oughbred Racing Associations of the United States after a saliva test of Big Stage showed the presence of a narcotic drug and caffeine When the laboratory of the State Racing Commission so reported tfce stewards of the Jamaica meeting began an investigation and called in the TRPB as required by law the case was reported to the Federal Nar ¬ cotics Bureaus BureausOn On May 3 Sande appeared before United States commissioner Edward F Fay on charges of illegal possession of narcotics and then his case was brought before the federal grand jury which today returned no true bill of indictment Sande admitted that Big Stage had been given a stimulant for the purpose of a work ¬ out on the Saturday preceding the Wednes ¬ day on which the horse won SaUde his foreman Eugene Donaldson and Francis Booth a groom in his employ denied that any drug or stimulant had been given the horse after his workout on Saturday April 17 17It It was believed that the use of the same tongue strap employed in the workout may have resulted inthe positive reaction of the saliva test testOfficials Officials of the TRPB and The Jockey Club could not be contactedafter the grand Jurys disposition of the Sande case was made known but it was learned that the exjockeys 60day suspension remains in force
