Calumet Well on Way Again Towards New Earnings Mark Gleanings of 51551010 Date Are 66769 Greater Than at Same Time in 1947 1947NEW NEW YORK N Y May 21 Last year 36 horses who carried the deservedly popu jlar Devils red and blue silks of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm earned 1402436 and established an alltime record for money won in a single season The pre ¬ vious standard also credited to Calumet was 601660 representing the combined earning power of the stables 34 starters in 1944 1944Records Records are made to be broken but when DAILY RACING FORMS annual review edi ¬ tion published early in January of this year paid tribute to Wrights amazing Calumeteors it was generally be ¬ lieved that this record is going to remain in the book for a long time timeHowever However the 1947 mark already appears headed for the scrap heap for on the basis of Calumets earnings from January 1 1947 to May 21 1947 in ¬ clusive and for the same period this year there is reason to assume that a new money earning record is in the making makingTo To date this season Wrights whirlwinds have won 515510 That is an impressive figure but it becomes even more impressive when one realizes that the stables earnings at this time last year that big big year were 449341 exactly 66169 less than the 1948 total totalYes Yes there was reason for the assumption that the 1947 mark would ndt be surpassed but that reason has vanished like Cita jtions opposition Purses reached a new high in 1947 It was true that they would remain at virtually the same peak this year but would the Calumet horses be powerful enough to take advantage of the big money opportunities offered offeredArmed Armed Big Gun During 1947 1947Calumets Calumets bigtimer Armed who had been voted the Horse of the Year in 1947 and who had gleaned 376325 in that year more than 25 per cent of the stables combined total was getting old He still retained most of his speed all of his cour ¬ age and weight carrying ability but at seven years he wasnt likely to prove as invincible as he had been at six sixBewitch Bewitch who had won 213675 in sprints in 1947 when she was undoubtedly the best twoyearold filly in training would be asked to stretch her speed in 48 to travel a route Could she do it Faultless and Fer ¬ vent credited with 202730 and 166600 respectively in 1947 were leaving the lush green pastures of the threeyearold divi ¬ sion for the wideopen or so it seemed handicap ranks ranksThe The bright spots in the Calumet picture were Citation voted the best twoyearold of the year and who had earned 166600 in winning eight of his nine races and Free America a lightly raced colt who was rated a comer by Ben Jones general manager of Calumet and his son Jimmy trainer of the impressive string stringAlso Also on the credit side were the stables twoyearolds unknown qualities before the season got under way of course but poten ¬ tially as strong a group of youngsters as there was in the land landBut But the record of 1402436 appeared in ¬ surmountable The stable had to win many rich races to approach it would have to perform something of a miracle to surpass it That miracle comparative figures reveal seems to be coming to pass From January 1 1947 to May 21 1947 in ¬ clusive 31 horses carried Wrights colors They started 132 times and won 58 races This year Calumet has been represented by a total of only 23 horses to date and they have won 43 of their 113 races racesThe The percentage of events won by the stable during this period in 1947 was close to 44 a truly remarkable showing This years percentage is 38 not nearly as good but the victories were achieved in richer races The high winning percentages in both years warrant wellearned pats on the back for Wright the Joneses and lest we for ¬ get the horses horsesThe The richest horse in the barn last year at this time was Faultless who had won the Flamingo Blue Grass Derby Trial Preak ness and Withers Stakes earning 202730 Next on the list was mighty Armed whose triumphs included the McLennan Widener and Gulfstream Handicaps and whose cash totalled 97600 97600Bewitch Bewitch destined for bigger things had started only three times and earned 12950 a fraction of the amount she was to amass later In the season while Fervents acquisi ¬ tion of a mere 3700 gave no hint of his class and no tipoff to the fact that he would be credited with 166600 for the year when 47 faded into 48 48Calumet Calumet already has broken one record this year When Citation romped home in the Preakness and Faultless took the Gal ¬ lant Fox with his supposedly superior stablemate Fervent in the second slot the stable set a world standard for single days earnings the combined gleanings of the three horses amounting to 167170 167170Citation Citation Has Won 268020 This Year YearCalumets Calumets leader this year as most folks know is Citation whose victories in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness followed triumphs in the Derby Trial Chesapeake Stakes Everglades Handicap Seminole Handicap and Flamingo Stakes His earn ¬ ings thus far this season are 268020 and many rich opportunities lie ahead If he maintains his present pace he is certain to surpass Assaults singleseason earning record or424195 established in 1946 But that is another story storyFaultless Faultless Wrights money ace at this time last year is second on the current list with 66400 mainly because of his sur ¬ prise score over his stablemate Fervent in the Gallant Fox Fervent winner of the Dixie is next with 54775 and is followed by Coaltown who has captured five of his six races he was beaten by Citation in the Kentucky Derby and has earned 47950 47950Can Can Calumet be expected to be as suc ¬ cessful for the remainder of the year as it was from the latter part of May to Decem ¬ ber 1947 This writer does not wish to hex the stable but can point out that Faultless got nothin in the last renewal of the rich Belmont Stakes and that Cita ¬ tion appears allpowerful in the forthcom ing running And what Citation does not stakesI pick up in the way of threeyearold stakes I le lilrAlir t 4 TJ ra B vuuulUV friendly vuuulUVfriendly enemy Coaltown CoaltownFaultless Faultless Withers score last year came on May 17 so it is included in the comparative figures The Withers this season is to be run on May 29 and Coaltown is a prohibit ¬ ive choice choiceFree Free America Highly Regarded RegardedThe The stable is well fortified for the many remaining stakes for horses of all ages Citation and Coaltown are in the limelight now but Wright has another threeyear old who may prove a tough customer for both to beat later in the season Free America AmericaFervent Fervent and Faultless are going to have their say in the handicaps and this sum ¬ mer their renowned stablemate Armed is to return to competition Bewitch Whirl Some and the other threeyearold fillies in the barn are being readied for the various Oaks events still to be run runAnd And the twoyearolds Those wellbred youngsters have not made an appearance as yet but it is reasonable to assume that Calumet will come up with powerful candi ¬ dates for titular honors as usual usualSo So things appear bright indeed for Calu ¬ met Farm to set a new record Listed below are tables showing the stables comparative earnings to May 21 1947 and for the same period this year 1948 Horse HorseCitation Sts 1st 2d SdEarngs
