REFLECTIONS I By Nelson Dunstan Crack Milers Seek Metropolitan Today Stymie Will Try to Make It a Double Acorn to Be Run at Belmont on Tuesday Calumet Well Supplied With Stallions StallionsNEW NEW YORK N Y May 21 Some of Americas famous events will be contested at the tracks tomorrow The richest race of the day will be the 50000 Golden State Breeders Handicap at Hollywood Park while the second in money value will be the 25000 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park Over in New Jersey Garden State Park will offer the 10000 William Penn Stakes for twoyearold colts and geldings and out at Washington Park the Lincoln Fields Asso ¬ ciation will feature the Joliet Stakes which is also for twoyearold colts and geldings Up in New England Suffolk Downs will also feature a 10000 race this being the Ply ¬ mouth Rock Handicap for threeyearolds and older horses The Metropolitan shapes UD as one whale of a horse race for at one mile it will bring together some of the fastest horses in the handicap ranks Stymie the worlds moneywinning champion was the winner of this event last year and this Jacobs horse will be out to repeat that victory In last years renewal Stymie ran the one mile in 137 and it would not surprise us if one of the contestants bettered that figure tomorrow tomorrowThere There will be only one stake event during the coming week at Belmont Park as a forerunner to the Juvenile and Withers which will be contested a week from tomorrow On Tuesday they will stage the 15000 Acorn for three yearold fillies at one mile Although the Calumet Farm has named both Bewitch and Whirl Some it is doubtful if last years champion two year old filly Bewitch will go to the post Whirl Some who won three of her 10 starts last year may be a starter and if so is likely to be opposed by Scattered Picnic Lunch Inheritance Vashti Itsabet and White Lady the C V Whitney miss who was a winner at Belmont early this week This race is a forerunner to the 50000 Coaching Club American Oaks which is to be run on June Z and is considered the most important event for members of that sex and age that is run in the East To date very few fillies in the threeyearold ranks have been seen in action but it is safe to say that the Coaching Club will draw a goodsized field from the 78 that were originally nominated Calumet has namednfour for this event for besides Bewitch and Whirl Some they have Whirling Girl who is by Whirlaway out of Nellie Flag and Yesme a bay daughter of Blenheim II Lyric LyricSamuel Samuel D Riddle was a recent visitor at Calumet Farm in Kentucky and it may surprise you to know that the owner of Man o War went there to discuss the possibility of securing a service to Coaltown when that speedster is retired from racing At the moment Warren Wright has two of the most valuable stud prospects in Citation and Coaltown but for the time being he is well organized in that department with Bull Lea Whirl away Pensive Sun Again and of course the veteran Chance Play who was foaled in 1923 and is fast approaching the end of his days as a stallion Citation is a beautifullybred horse for he is by Bull Lea out of Hydroplane a daughter of Hyperion Toboggan by Hurry On Hydroplane was bred by the late Earl of Derby and we believe she cost the owner of Calumet Farm 2800 guineas Coaltown too is by Bull Lea and his dam is Easy Lass a daughter of Blenheim II out of Slow and Easy a daughter of Colin While he has not been out this season Calumet also has a splendid prospect in Free America who is by Blenheim H out of Columbiana by PeteeWrack So it is obvious that Warren Wright will not have to seek beyond his own farm for younger stallions to join with such illustrious seniors as Bull Lea Whirlaway and the others othersCalumet Calumet Farm now has 27 horses for the Belmont Park campaign Starting with tomorrows Metropolitan they have eligibles for every stake event to be carded before the Belmont meeting comes to a close on Monday June 14 From Belmont they will assemble their power ¬ ful stable at Arlington Park in Chicago A the Arling ¬ tonWashington meetings there will be 33 added money fixtures contested and nine are for twoyearolds eight for threeyearolds and 16 for members of the older division From afar it appears as if they have a hammer lock on the Arlington Classic and the American Derby the pair of threeyearold fixtures which will each be worth about 90000 gross and also for shorter events in which Coaltown will be a starter The interesting angle of the Calumets at the moment is found in the twoyear olds of which the Jones boys have ZZ colts and fillies If these youngsters live up to the expectations of their trainers there is no telling at this writing to what sum the Calumet Stable will climb in earnings this season Last year Citation Bewitch and Whirl Some contributed handsomely to the coffers of the Warren Wright group groupR R J Kleberg master of King Ranch is a visitor at Belmont and has reported that the Triple Crown winner is undergoing treatment as a shy breeder It was something of a blow to many mare owners when it was discovered that this brilliant horse was shy Assault is by no means the first to be sent to the farm and this condition discovered Years ago Twenty Grand was found to be shy and though many attempts were made to bring him around they were unsuccessful At the moment Dr John McCloud a professor at Cornell University is investigating the problem of a shy breeder As long ago as 1941 he examined Twenty Grand and also Boojum at the Whitney Farm Boojum was one of the fastest horses this writer can recall When he was retired it was found that he would have few foals but he has had some nevertheless and on Wednesday at Belmont his Black Majesty was the winner of the second race Medical science has made rapid strides in other improvements of the thoroughbred and it would not surprise us if in the case of Assault he did have some foals but like Boojum just a few every year Shyness in the stallion is a perplexing problem to the scientists as they have very little data with which to work but now that they are investigating thoroughly we believe they will improve conditions along these lines in the years to come
