Build Vet College From Mutuel Tax TaxModern Modern 4000000 School Now Under Way on Campus Of University of California CaliforniaLOS LOS ANGELES Calif June 5 Erected with funds derived from the states share of parimutuel receipts at California race tracks the 4000000 School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Californias Davis Calif branch is rapidly taking shape and is expected to be completed and ready for occupancy some time in the lat ¬ ter part of 1949 1949At At the recently held groundbreaking ceremonies President Robert G Sproul of the University of California presided and the occasion was honored by the presence of Governor Earl Warren and other state officials and legislators legislatorsThe The new institution will fill a need long felt by the livestock industry of California in general and thoroughbred breeding in particular which is now estimated to rep ¬ resent an investment in the state in excess of 50000000 Many more qualified vet ¬ erinarians than are now available are needed to care for the thoroughbred stock on 380 breeding farms in the state and at racing plants also where there has been a shortage of men trained in the latest methods of modern science scienceAuditorium Auditorium Will Accommodate 300 300The The facilities under construction will in ¬ clude a main building with three class ¬ rooms each with seats for 80 students an auditorium with accommodations for 300 surgery presurgery pharmacy Xray clinical record and special treatment rooms There are 10 acres in the building site and in addition to this there will be a field station for experiments under pasture conditions An area of 160 acres suitable for irrigated pastures has been procured about onehalf mile south of Davis DavisCompletion Completion of the new project will en ¬ able the university to conduct instruction leading to the degree of Doctor of Veteri ¬ nary Medicine The first two college years may at at any approver university college or junior college but the fouryear profes ¬ sional junior course must be taken at Davis DavisAlthough Although some 200 students are pres ¬ ently engaged in preveterinary studies at Davis Berkeley Los Angeles and Santa Barbara campuses of the university a maximum of only 40 can be admitted this year to the professional courses now being given in the Animal Sciences Building of the Davis institution institutionAt At the groundbreaking ceremonies Governor Earl Warren referred to the al ¬ most complete lack of veterinary colleges in the Rocky Mountain and West Coast states and expressed his amazement that in an area approximately onethird the size of the nation there is now only one small veterinary school
