Report Commission Opposed ToEmergency Gresham Meet MeetPORTLAND PORTLAND Ore June 5 It was re ¬ ported here today that the Oregon State Racing Commission which convened here yesterday to consider a request from horse ¬ men for a 12day emergency meeting at Gresham Park because of the recent clos ¬ ing of Portland Meadows as a result of the floods which have devastated this area and left many turfmen in dire straits was not in favor of the emergency Gresham ses ¬ sion sionThe The stranded horsemen have appointed Ivan Thomas and Thomas Louttit both highly regarded officials of the West Coast as a committee to represent them Thomas estimated that approximately 25000 would be necessary to tide the horsemen over the present crisis crisisFrank Frank R Menne chairman of the Ore ¬ gon Racing Commission made a survey of the situation He found about 50 or 60 owners in distress and in the neighborhood of 180 grooms exercise boys and trainers also needing assistance The six or seven hundred thoroughbreds who were evacu ¬ ated in time to save them from the onrush ing waters of the Columbia River were taken to Salem or Gresham Hope is held in some quarters of a meeting at Portland Meadows late in the year
