Belmont Stakes tomorrow and only two of them Coaltown and Golden Light can be regarded as doubtful starters In the event that Coaltown does go to the post Hedley Woodhouse will be in the saddle N L Pierson already having gone to Chicago Trainer Jimmy Jones said that the fact that Coaltown has drawn the inside post with Citation next to him might lead the Calumet entourage to start both colts with the idea that Coaltown would serve as a sort of cushion between Citation and the rail Citation who has been compared with the best thoroughbreds in American turf history looms a minimum favorite to capture the mile and a half classic and become the eighth horse to win the Triple Crown the first two tiers of which are the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Eddie Arcaro who will again be in the saddle is seeking the honor of becoming the first jockey to win the Triple Crown twice He turned the trick with Whirlaway in 1941 1941Decision Decision on Wagering at 1 00 p m mThe The Calumet to the Belmont with a record of 17 victories in 19 starts has re ¬ peatedly beaten all of the leaders of his own generation at distances up to a mile and a quarter and ventured out of his class to trounce seasoned sprinters last winter The two defeats suffered by the son of Bull Lea Hydroplane II both were in sprints Last year his stablemate Be ¬ witch beat him in the Arlington Futurity and was herself undefeated at the time while this spring Mrs Helen L Sagners Saggy led him under the wire in the Chesapeake Trial at six furlongs then was humiliated by Citation in the longer Chesa ¬ peake found that last quarter a fur piece few observers doubt his ability to carry his speed as far as horses go Of those testing his stamina tomorrow Better Self and Escadru have the best records and both won their last starts Escadru however finished last in the Derby while Better Self occupied the same ignominious position at the end of the Preakness PreaknessEscadru Escadru was an impressive winner of the Peter Pan Handicap at a mile and a fur ¬ long here last week finishing strongly and indicating that he had recovered the form he showed last fall in winning the Ardsley Handicap In extenuation of his poor ef ¬ fort in the Derby it should be noted that Escadru scraped himself severely on the fence early in the running The most en ¬ couraging factor in his Peter Pan victory to trainer Ed Christmas was the fact that the son of Challenger II showed little or no tendency to lug for the rail racing straight and true through the stretch stretchUntil Until the middle of August last season Better Self was regarded as the best two yearold in the East then lost his form fairly completely though finishing second to Citation in the Pimlico Futurity This spring the Bimelech colt started like a ball o fire beating older horses with ease in the Paumonok on a sloppy track Escadru beat him in his next start however and he showed nothing in the Preakness Last week Better Self journeyed to Suffolk Downs and had no trouble beating a mod ¬ erate field in the Yankee Handicap at a mile and a quarter again on a sloppy track which he obviously prefers prefersSalmagundi Salmagundi has not met Citation but the Santa Anita Derby winner was beaten by Better Self in the Yankee YankeeChampagne Champagne Winner of 1947 1947Vulcans Vulcans Forge won the Champagne last year beating Escadru who turned the tables in the Ardsley His best races this year were his place of second far behind Citation in the Preakness and his surprise victory over Coaltown in the Withers That mile was run at a sizzling pace for six fur ¬ longs after which the field stopped to a walk with Vulcans Forge having enough left to come from last place to score by daylight A week later Vulcans Forge turned in a miserable effort behind Es ¬ cadru in the Peter Pan refusing to extend himself after having dead aim on the lead ¬ ers at the head of the stretch The son of Mahmoud is a moody sort and not always willing to run his race raceFaraway Faraway has always been held in ex ¬ tremely high regard by owner Samuel D Riddle The War Relic colt won impres ¬ sively at Jamaica with Ted Atkinson in the saddle then turned in a poor race in the Jersey Stakes which was Citations last victorious appearance Faraway was in trouble in the early stages of that race made a move near the end and tired badly Gasparilla finished fast also weakened at the end N Golden Light won a maiden race at the direct expense of his stablemate Whirling Fox last week then tired badly in a mod ¬ erate race won by Bam when Nichols Combest was unable to hold him in the first six furlongs His owner William Woodward has won four earlier runnings of the Belmont with Gallant Fox Omaha Granville and Johnstown and likes to see his colors in the classic classicCoaltown Coaltown is considerably better than just an average running mate for the champion despite his defeat in the Withers in which he appeared to choke up at the eighth pole after setting the scorching pace That was Coaltowns second defeat after five brilliant victories and followed his race in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby in which he also set the pace until passed by Citation CitationEleven Eleven in National Stallion StallionThe The Belmont Stakes is generally re ¬ garded as the most important if not the most spectacular American test for three yearolds and antedates both the Derby and Preakness Its roster of winners is a bead roll of champions championsThe The Belmont will be supported by the first running of the colt division of the 10000 National Stallion Stakes which in former years was run in one division for juveniles of both sexes This fivefurlong dash on the Widener straightaway has drawn a field of 11 headed by Maine Chance Farms Mr Busher the full brother to the brilliant Busher Mr Busher won his only start here in impressive style a few days ago agoMr Mr Bushers chief rivals appear to be Mrs Walter M Jeffords War Monger C V stakes at Jamaica War Monger won his last two starts in Maryland and is a highly regarded colt Repentance chased Swap Out then Mr Busher in his last two races racesIf If all nine go postward in the Belmont Stakes the winner will net 78700 from the gross Purse of 118300 If Citation does the expected he will have amassed the staggering sum of 545700 545700The The weather forecast indicates showers tomorrow and the possibility of a soft track may be slightly encouraging to rival train ¬ ers though Citation has shown he can negotiate any kind of footing with equal facility Racing secretary John B Camp ¬ bell has arranged an excellent supporting card and a throng of some 50000 is ex ¬ pected to pack Belmont Parks vast stands regardless of the weather
