BETWEEN By Oscar Otis Stenographer Top Montana Trainer Strub Appointed to Met Board Jaclyn to Be Represented at Sales Luck Turns for Jockey J W Martin MartinHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 12 About a decade ago a Miss Marion Roth hit the headlines out this way by combining a job as a stenographer in the State Department of Vehicles in Sacramento and owning and train ¬ ing a thoroughbred at Caliente The horse was named Chifla and the task was something out of the ordinary in that Miss Roth had to commute every week ¬ end between her desk and the track a matter of some 550 miles or 1100 miles for the round trip We met Miss Roth here yesterday now Mrs R H Martin wife of one of the Wests better known trainers She is now able to forget the typewriter and motor vehicles in the state capital is the owner with her hus ¬ band of a 6000acre cattle ranch in north ¬ west Washington and on said ranch keeps a sizeable acreage just for thoroughbreds The stallion Touch and Go is lord and master of the haras which includes Chifla a daughter of Brush Brush Maudeen a daughter of Sun Hatter Tracer Flash a mare by Tracer and Chiquita Bravo by Little Pebble Mrs Martin is more than paying her way with her stable which numbers five head at Caliente at the moment but which will campaign as it did last year on the Montana Fair Circuit and Spokane Oddity is that Martin the horse trainer devotes his full time to cattle pro ¬ duction Mrs Martin the former stenog ¬ rapher raised and trains the thorough ¬ breds Her stable is among the leading win ¬ ners of the season not only in Caliente but also in Montana MontanaAlt Alt AltAppointment Appointment of Santa Anitas Charles H Strub to serve on the board of the Metropolitan Opera of New York came as a signal honor to the executive head and founder of Los Angeles Turf Club Few people outside of California know it but Strub is as active in civic and state affairs as in sport Gov Earl Warren drafted him during the war to handle the statewide and critical servicemens housing to direct campaigns for Army relief and today he is vicepresident of the NonProfit Greater Los Angeles Plans Inc The fact that the Metropolitan chose a turf executive on its board can only be interpreted as a trib ¬ ute to the character of the man which has been reflected vividly to the turf by the high plane of the operation of Santa Anita AnitaA A A AJay Jay Paley coowner with Leon and Blanche Levey of Philadelphia in the own ership of the Jaclyn Stable has returned from an extended stay in the East and will remain here for the duration of the season Paley does not plan to attend either the Keeneland or Saratoga sales in person but Jaclyn will be represented by Dr Levy and the Jaclyn trainer Ralph West The Jaclyn Stable will continue to campaign in the East until early fall at least but next year the horses may race the year around in California At least Paley is thinking of giving the idea a try tryHorses Horses and People Found a man who decorates his stable and silks with a three leaf clover not a four The man is John A Roach laundry operator and sportsman who maintains a 15acre horse haven in the San Fernando Valley and has one horse here in the care of Fred Bowman The new Australian tote for Ohio recently passed through the port of San Francisco and made a bit of news there as being the largest single cargo ever flown from Down Under to the United States The cargo was flown in 26 special crates at the rate of 174 per pound Cost 5500 A AJockey Jockey Jack W Martin is getting a welldeserved break these days Martin was seriously injured several months back in an automobile collision en route from Santa Anita to Bay Meadows He re ¬ sumed riding here at this meeting but had trouble getting mounts Then came Flying Rythm at 16780 in the Hollywood Oaks and now Martin riding in the peak form of his career is finding the going
