REFLECTIONS I By Nelson Dunstar New York Racing to Aqueduct on Thursday ThreeYearOlds Still Have Many Races Fillies Mares in Delaware Park Limelight Monmouth Arlington Parks Ready for Opening OpeningNEW NEW YORK N YM June 12 12When When the United Hunts brings racing at Belmont to a close on Wednesday the New York sport will shift to Aqueduct for a 27day meeting During that meeting 11 stake events will be contested and the first of these is the 20000 Queens County Handicap which will be run on Thursday the opening day and is at a mile and a sixteenth for threeyearolds and older horses This race closed with 42 nomi ¬ nations and on the list are many of the best handicap performers in the East including Stymie the worlds moneywinning cham ¬ pion Next Saturday the feature will be the 20000 Gazelle for threeyearolds fillies at a mile and a sixteenth Among those named is the Coaching Club American Oaks winner Scattered and she is likely to be opposed by White Lady Watermill and others who have done well in the racing of that age and sex division so far this year The richest races of the Aqueduct meeting will be the 50000 Dwyer for threeyearolds at a mile and a quarter on July 5 and the 50000 Brooklyn Handicap which will bring together three yearolds and older horses at a mile and a quarter on July 17 the closing day Stymie was the winner of the Brooklyn in 1945 ran second to Gallorette in 1946 then second to Assault in 1947 and is again an eligible for this years renewal renewalNow Now that the Belmont and Kent Stakes results are being placed in the record books what of the threeyear olds There was a time when this division had a lull after the running of the Belmont but in the new order of stakes schedules those days are now gone On June 26 at Narragansett Park the 25000 Providence Stakes will be run and on the same day at Delaware Park the 17500 Leonard Richards Stakes will be contested as a memorial to one of the most popular racing commission ¬ ers this country ever had Virtually the same threeyear olds who were named for todays Kent are on the Leonard Richards list but your guess is as good as ours as to who will go in what The Shevlin Handicap with 20000 value will be run at Aqueduct on June 30 and a day later the 20000 Skokie Handicap will be the feature event at Arlington Then on July 3 the 50000 Westerner will be the days attraction at Hollywood Park in California and two days later the 50000 Dwyer will be run here hereAt At Delaware Park next week they will stage two stake events the first of these being the 10000 Tom Roby Steeplechase which is for fouryearolds and older jumpers who have never won a sweepstake This event is named for the great little jockey Tom Roby who was injured at Belmont Park some six years ago and is still a hospital patient The unique item about this race is that the jockey riding the winner is presented with the cup rather than the owner Among those eligible are George H Bostwicks Escondrijo and Dimitri Djordjadzes Diable de Gosse On the weekend the sporting Wilmington course will present the 25000 New Castle Handicap which at a mile and a sixteenth is for fillies and mares three years old and upward Practically every filly and mare who competed in the Top Flight Handicap is eligible including Honeymoon Red Shoes Gal ¬ lorette and also But Why Not Elpis Miss Kimo Risolater First Flight and Imprudence II the Cain Hoy Stables im ¬ ported filly who won the One Thousand Guineas and Epsom Oaks in England last year yearOn On Memorial Day the Garden State Park meeting came to a close with the running of the Vineland Hand ¬ icap Due to increased taxation the meeting was a dis ¬ appointment to the Camden track officials New Jersey newspapers have been very outspoken regarding the short ¬ sightedness of the lawmakers in the Skeeter State Whether or not it was to avoid confliction of dates with other tracks we do not know but many people have been puzzled by the fact that there is a lapse of three weeks in the racing from the Garden Stale Park closing to the opening of Monmouth Park a week from Monday Those who are interested in New Jersey racing will be watching the progress of the Monmouth Park meeting keenly and should there be a decided drop in the figures at that pop ¬ ular course we expect to hear editorial requests that the taxe be reduced to 10 per cent rather than the 12 per cent which is now in vogue In the short space of time it has operated Monmouth Park has become one of the most popular tracks in the East and this depite the fact that it does not offer purse and stake values in keeping with those at older and larger courses When the meeting opens on June 21 the feature event will be the 10000 Salvator Mile for threeyearolds and older horses horsesCalumet Calumet Farms large string will be moving on to Arlington Park in Chicago early next week to await the meeting which opens a week from Monday The Warren Wright contingent is but one of many stables that will go west for the stakestudded program at the attractive Chicago track The openingday fea ¬ ture will be the 20000 Hyde Park Stakes and while Bewitch was the winner of this event last year there is some doubt as to whether Calumet will have a colorbearer this year as the juve ¬ niles have been very slow in rounding to form The Arlington Park stake schedule is rounded out so that members of all divi ¬ sions will have chances to shoot for the long end of rich purses Coaltown will be pointed for the 20000 Skokie Handicap which is a sixfurlong dash for threeyearolds As usual the Stars and Stripes Handicap with 50000 in added money will be the feature event on July 5 and although Armed was the win ¬ ner of this race over With Pleasure last year we imagine that the Jones boys will send Faultless or Fervent to the post in an attempt to make it a Calumet double Jimmy Jones tells us that the Arlington Classic which will be run on July 31 is one of Citations principle objectives this summer and that he will send the son of Bull Lea in the 25000 Dick Welles Stakes which is for threeyearolds at one mile as a tightener for the more important race the Classic a week later
