BETWEEN RACES I By Oscar Otis Rate Alibhai Bargain at 500000 Ten of Get in Forthcoming Sales Once Delivers Forms Now Rider College Dance at Golden Gate GateHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 17 George Brent figures he got the biggest turf bargain in his life for one thirtieth of Alibhai It cost him about 16500 and for that he has the privilege along with all other holders of one share of the son of Hyperion for a service a year Brent calculates he easily could get his investment back in one yearling A stock cer ¬ tificate entitles the syndicate member to one breeding a season as long as Alibhai lives The California syndicate which was organized to bid on or buy the Louis B Mayer stallion was on a 20 share 25000 per share basis and at the time of the sale to the Kentuckians lacked the sale of six shares Californians of course are sorry to see Alibhai leave but the blow was softened by the fact that there is ample Alibhai blood owned within the state and which is expected to prove potent in the years to come There are 10 Alibhais in the forthcoming dispersal sale of yearlings on the part of the Mayer organization plus weanlings at the side of the mares to be disposed of later in the year They no doubt will attract the most determined bidding as the last opportunity for Golden Staters to acquire more of the blood line It is freely admitted here that Alibhai will have better opportunities in Kentucky than in California This being the case even the most ardent Chamber of Commerce booster wishes Alibhai well in his new home and nothing could please them better than to see the great coast stallion either vie for or become the leading stud of the nation Alibhai did wonders for California breed ¬ ing a debt that is most gracefully and openly acknowledged by California breeders breedersA A A A AFrom From a distributor of the DAILY RACING FORM to jockey by way of the cavalry is the unusual rise to riding note of Bernard Pludow currently riding in good form here although he is not among the leaders at the moment Pludow is a product of Fair ¬ fax High School in Hollywood and upon leaving school started with the Los Angeles or West Coast RACING FORM in the small children in Los Angeles said amusement centers consisting of pony rides miniature trains etc He parleyed this into a riding academy in the San Fernando Valley At the outbreak of the War he enlisted in the Cavalry and while stationed at Fort Riley Kans came under the eye of Ralph Neves and Red How ell Both advised him he had the makings of a rider Upon his dis ¬ charge he headed for the nearest race course which was running at the time Caliente and his first mount Crackade was beaten a scant head He has ridden in steady and dependable fashion ever since His best seasons have been on the socalled smaller tracks out this way This summer is the first he has essayed a full time campaign on a track of such conse ¬ quence as Hollywood He will leave for Pleasanton next month then will return south for Del Mar Pludow hopes to ride for a number of years to come but even so is quietly preparing himself to become a trainer when the day finally comes to hang hangup up his tack Golden Gate Fields made its debut in the community life of the San Francisco Bay area last Saturday night in most impres ¬ sive fashion The Golden Gate manage ¬ ment turned over its spacious clubhouse and turf club to the annual graduation dance of the senior class of the University of California The class couldnt have its usual San Francisco Hotel for these fes ¬ tivities because of the visit of President Truman to the Bay area The Golden Gate plant proved so adaptable for the occasion that university authorities are considering asking for the track each year from now on Don Williams of the Harry Curland organization handled the catering for the 2000 guests In the past all California tracks have cooperated generously in loan ¬ ing their facilties for events of community welfare That Golden Gate has joined the fold is to be commended commendedA A 4 A j jMessrs Messrs Lou Rowan and L G Burns are part owners of a fine bay filly yearling by Reading n Better Batter she by Jacopo and
