JUDGES STAND 1 By Charles Hatton 1 1Flying Flying Mare Foals Italian Colt in Ky See Minus Pool Race for Tom Underwood Rico Monte May Enter Stud Next Season Increase Keeneland Futurity Backstretch BackstretchLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky June 17 The 17The first foal ever to come to the United States in utero air mail special so to speak was delivered a few days ago at W J Salmons Mereworth Farm at nearby Yamallton The itinerant newcomer is a bay colt sired by the Italian Derby winner Traghetto and his dam is the Italian mare Stella Salmon bought Stella abroad last winter and she is the first broodmare flown to this side of the Atlantic She arrived at LaGuardia Field on February 27 after an uneventful hop of 24 hours from Rome Stella is herself an Oaks winner and had been bred to Traghetto in her native land last season Salmon seems to have a good deal of confidence in the Italian blood of the rangy Ortello and he has that horses sons Sirte and Vezzano whom he imported from Italy in service at Mereworth Ortello himself died iu California soon after his importation He was 21 when he suc ¬ cumbed to a heart attack at Glen Cove Stud on April 5 of 1947 As an aside it might be observed that moving sires at an ad ¬ vanced age has not seemed to improve their health remember ¬ ing also Beau Pere and Blue Larkspur This reference to Mere worth reminds that it has one of the largest collections of mares anywhere with a total of 109 to the latest tally tallyMuch Much to nobodys surprise Tom R Underwood has become a Democratic candidate for Congress It may turn out to be with the approval of a majority in November I am trying to create a minus pool race Underwood said here today and some of those in political circles have the opinion he will receive the nomination without a primary Undertvood has been secretary of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners for 14 years and we suppose that If he is elected the turf solons shall have to find a new wheel horse in their 1949 conven ¬ tion Underwood always has been a champion of racing both here in Kentucky and in Washington and recently opposed measures which would place harmful tax oit mutuels and livestock In the Blue Grass GrassHoratio Horatio Mason expects that W Arnold Hangers stout Rico Monte will be retired to the stud here in 1949 Alain du Breil and others who make a point of observing the activities of imported horses consider this Argentinian quite the best South American racer that has been brought here in recent years Rico Monte is a fiveyearold son of Saint Patrick and last season was his most successful for he won the Whitney Sara ¬ toga Handicap Manhattan Handicap and New York Handicap and 139900 The previous year he won 54520 As a three yearold Rico Monte was raced in Argentina where he ran five times and was twice first and twice second in important events Unlike some other South Americans he has all the substance a trainer might like to whittle on and enough zip to be a factor at middle distances The male line of Rock Sand was near extinction in this country when Pilate came along and Rico Monte traces to him through Congreve Copyright and Tracery Matter of fact Pilate was used as a teaser when Eight Thirty and Lovely Night were developed from his first crop cropTo To anyone going racing these summer days the fall sport seems pretty remote and yet the clubs having these dates already are making preparations for their meets General manager Bishop of the Keeneland course has made an announcement that the historic Breeders Fu ¬ turity will have 20000 added instead of the 10000 on the stake blanks at the time of closing We should think that this 100 per cent increase will have the desired effect of attracting more of the better twoyearolds to Kentucky for the race During the spring meet this tour ¬ ist ventured to say that a chute for seven furlongs or mile races seemed indicated at Keeneland because the awkward mile and a sixteenth oval does not permit races at distances from six furlongs to a mile and a sixteenth One imagines that horsemen will be pleased to learn a chute from which seven furlongs events may be started is now under consideration considerationTurf Turf ana More racing men are becoming interested in well bred fillies Rush Brisbane of Chicago was here recently to inspect the fillies by top sires that will be offered at Keeneland Public interest in the turf is not decreasing although the volume of play has diminished Several new track record crowds have been reported this season among them Belmont and Holly ¬ wood Park marks The progeny of Heliopolis have averaged some 9000 at the sales and up to now his sales yearlings have average earnings of 20000 One wag suggests The 6 78 as a name for Keenelands new chute Fads dam Swank now is 20 but is believed to be in foal to Halcyon Since so many thoroughbred breeders are going in for pure bred cattle a sum ¬ mer show of their herds is a possibility at Keeneland Brookdale Bel Air Greentree Almahurst Elmendorf Cold stream and many other farms have them
