Charles Town Cancels Part of Days Card CardHeavy Heavy Rains Renders Track Unsafe for Horses or Jockeys JockeysCHARLES CHARLES TOWN W Va June 17 An unsafe racing surface rendered treacherous to horse and jockey due to heavy rains Tuesday night and Wednesday morning brought about the cancellation of this aft ¬ ernoons sport program following the run ¬ ning of the second race Racing will be presented tomorrow Post time for the first race is 2 p m mThe The sudden action today resulted from the refusal on the part of the jockeys to ride for the rest of the day over what they termed an unsafe race track One jockey Joseph Becerril was thrown during the running of the first race when his mount R Wells Black Tide skidded in the heavy and slippery going and another was pitched to the sodden ground during the second event The latter jockey was Freddie Kratz who was catapulted from Edward Cooneys Rendova Neither rider was in ¬ jured juredAt At the request of the jockeys a meeting was called after the second race and be ¬ tween the riders the board of stewards and two representatives of the West Virginia Racing Commission namely Frank Brooke and Mont Mclntyre it was decided to terminate the days sport at the request of the jockeys because of the unsafe con ¬ dition of the track according to the offi ¬ cial announcement by the board of stewards stewardsA A refund of 7656 was made to all persons having made wagers on the horses for the third race In addition a turnstile refund was made madeYesterdays Yesterdays sport program as well as to ¬ days scheduled card and that of tomorrow and Saturday is under the auspices of the Charles Town Horse Show Association AssociationThe The track was in bad condition yester ¬ day A few jockeys were thrown but none suffered serious injury The course was not in much better shape this afternoon as it was apparent after the first race A gathering of about 5000 were present
