BETWEEN RACES By Oscar Otis i iPurner Purner toPass Maturity Word Basement Development at Anita Flower Man to Sell Yearlings B C Tracks Ready for Inaugural InauguralHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 24 Fred Purner a goodwill man for Santa Anita departs early next week for an extended tour of Middlew e s t e r n and Atlantic seaboard tracks to spread the word that nominations are in order for the 1952 running of Santa Anitas 100000 Ma ¬ turity Nominations for the 1951 running al ¬ ready have closed and publication of the list of current yearlings Will be made within the next few days For 1949 and 1950 of course nominations will be accepted on the same basis as for other stakes requiring an early closing notably the 100000 Santa Anita Handicap But in 1951 the Maturity goes on to a Futurity basis and Dr Chas Strub and his asso ¬ ciates hope and in fact firmly believe that the race will gross 250000 or thereabouts when the Futurity fees become the rule Maybe it wont gross that much right away but there is little doubt but that it will become the richest net to winner of any race in the world Purner plans to visit the Keeneland sales and take his message directly to the breeders in the Blue Grass Carleton Burke director of racing at the Arcadia course will pay his annual visit to Saratoga Springs later in the season and Webb Everett when his chores as di ¬ rector of racing at Del Mar on loan from the Santa Anita management are over will make a prolonged stay in New York It may be seen that Santa Anita will be ma ¬ king a determined bid for all the top horses in the nation nationA A A A AWe We rather imagine that the welcome sign will be out for Citation and Company and while Santa Anita is still six months away if the fabled son of Bull Lea marches through triumphantly at Arlington and Washington Parks it well could be within the realm of possibility that he could top the million dollar mark in earnings during the Santa Anita season If last winters program be taken as a criterion Citation would be eligible for races totalling 250 000 in added money in three races cleverly spaced throughout the 10 weeks season If Citation wanted to run at seven furlongs he could lift that goal to 300000 How ¬ ever some reshuffling of the traditional schedule of stakes will be necessary this winter With the close of the current Hol ¬ lywood season all California tracks will go on a sixdayaweek basis Santa Anitas 50 days usually spaced over a 10week pe ¬ riod will be shortened to a couple of days over eight weeks Speaking of Santa Anita it is our pleas ¬ ure to report that extensive remodeling is well under way and instead as might be imagined of building the track upward rather Santa Anita is going under ¬ ground A vast area under the original grandstand that part adjacent to the club ¬ house is being developed as a recreational center A tunnel has been built to the pad ¬ dock leading to the area underneath the stand and this in turn connects with a tunnel to the infield The development which will in effect add another deck to Santa Anita operations will provide the usual parimutuel facilities and in addi ¬ tion about an acre of the enclosure will be made into an informal garden for dining facilities Harry Curland the caterer has decreed a country club atmosphere for this part of the development and at long last the run of the mill grandstand fan will be enabled to dine in an atmosphere rival ¬ ing that of the Turf Club A profusion of the latest type in direct lighting will turn the rather heretofore dreary basement into bright day Santa Anita also is building a new jockey room right at the saddling paddock an item which will save the long walk from jockey room to paddock and back again againA A A A AHorses Horses and People Through the courtesy and cooperation of the Hollywood Turf Club fans wishing to donate their dollar maximum contribution accepted for the George Woolf Memorial Fund of the Southern California Turf Writers Associa ¬ tion may do so at the press box The press box entrance is located on the mez ¬ zanine stairway in the grandstand nearest the clubhouse and Turf Club Receipts will be issued to all contributors The turf writers will erect a statue of the late and great rider in the Santa Anita paddock G F Finck of Chula Vistaj whose small farm is one of the show places of California because he specializes in raising flowers as well as thoroughbreds will offer a trio at the California Breeders Sale Finck makes playmates of his young thorough ¬ breds hence it was not surprising that Col Frank Koester who inspected all offerings for the breeders reports them appearance excellent shows results of good care The trio is composed of a filly by Dogaway Bonicry by Bon Homme a colt by Sir Oracle Ada Macaw by Macaw and a colt by Reading n Brown Leader by Colorbearer The yearling sale in ¬ cidentally the first selected and limited one ever held by the California Breeders will be held the nights of July 19 and 20 at the Santa Anita clubhouse clubhouseBritish British Columbia Turf and Country Club is all set for its once declared off meeting The inaugural this summer of the muchdiscussed tax track which pro ¬ cured revenue of about 800000 for the various branches of government while los ¬ ing 15000 for itself will be on Wednesday June 30 and the sport will continue for 28 straight days until July 31 The combined LansdowneBrighouse meetings will be run at Lansdowne If you have an eightyear old maiden dont ship there He wont be allowed to start Nor a horse over 13 years old for that matter And if you are a gossip keep your tongue bridled unless you know something There is a rule which reads Unwarranted accusations or charges made against any jockey following the run ¬ ning of a race will if found to be unwar ¬ ranted and malicious result in the perpe ¬ trator being penalized But if you like racing with an English touch yet as mod ¬ ern as America and like a timberland fishermans paradise one cannot recom ¬ mend the place too highly plus the Exhibi ¬ tion Park and Victoria meetings to follow
