JUDGES STAND By Charles Hatton Spy Song vs Coaltown Looms at Chicago Armed May Reappear During Washington Look at Fleet Ennobled Proves Worth 50 L B Mayer Still Leading Coast Breeder BreederLEXINGTON LEXINGTON Ky June 24 24There There is reason to believe that it will take a particularly brilliant sprinter to win the honors in this division here in the Middle West this season Spy Song was considered the leader of the last set in 47 and the Dixiana fiveyearold is training well for an attempt to win the honors at Arlington and Wash ¬ ington again this season Not long ago the dockers caught him three furlongs in 34 and trainer Jack Hodgins said that he is encouraged to think Spy Song may be bet ¬ ter than ever Indeed he is quoted as say ¬ ing I should be willing to have him hook up with Coaltown any time The idea is fascinating and there are several oppor ¬ tunities in the course of the Arlington Washington stakes program The first of these is in the Domino Handicap of 20000 at six furlongs on July 7 at the North Side course There is also the 25000 Myrtle wood Stakes of the same distance on July 22 The Dixiana stallion won this latter event last summer The first race of the Arlington season which seems at all likely to attract the three yearold Coaltown is the 20000 Skokie of six furlongs exclu ¬ sively for those of his own age at the Arlington Heights track on July Coaltown was debited with defeat in the Withers but his followers are inclined to excuse him that one oneArmed Armed is galloping at Arlington Park and we learn that he may reappear during the Washington Park meet This is a rather exciting prospect for the many admirers of 1947s Horse Of The Year To be perfectly candid about it Armed did not seem to have his old zip quite in winter races at Miami and he developed a little Ie trouble But he still is better than an empty stall and he is plump and cheerful For some curious reason Armed always has been more successful at Washington than at Arlington and he won The Whirlaway and Washington Park Handicap at the Homewood course last season Meanwhile his yearling brother Rearmed now has begun his racing education here at Calumet Farm It is stagger ¬ ing to estimate what he would make at the Keeneland Sales next month monthWilliam William Helis twoyearold Count Fleet colt Ennobled must be a nice individual For one thing he fetched 25000 at the Saratoga Sales last August But there is other more recer evidence A look at him was worth 50 to Lou P Doherty It seems that Doherty was at Belmont Park when Ennobled was to race He had not seen the colt and his handicapping figures pointed significantly to a rival While Doherty was waving 50 at a messenger the field filed out of the paddock he caught sight of Ennobled hesitated and looked again then thrust the money back into his pocket Ennobled won with impressive elan The records show that nine of the first progeny of Count Fleet made an average of 19589 at the various sales last summer Since those who have raced have done well it is prob ¬ able that the Count Fleets will be in demand again in 48 One colt the talent scouts seem to fancy is the brown out of Matriarch that Stone Creek Farm will offer here at Keeneland He has a really striking resemblance to the V Crown winner winnerL L B Mayer does not now race any horses but there 4 are indications that he may in some future years Bern borough and Busher have reverted to his ownership and he will retain considerable share in the syndicated Alibhai The movie magnate still is Californias leading thoroughbred breeder As this is written 12 Hollywood Park winners who were bred at his fabulous Perris nurs ¬ ery won him 7740 in breeders awards It may be of interest to Alibhais owners that he is leading the Holly ¬ wood Park sire list Seven of his progeny have won there Hard Boots naturally will be eager to see Alibhai who is valued at a cool halfmillion when he arrives at Spend ¬ thrift Farm They will find him a typical Hyperion line fired about the forelegs a compact chestnut not unlike his kinsman Pensive Busher was said to have been bred to him this spring but whether she is in foal we are not prepared to say sayTurf Turf ana Ogden Phipps mare Black Helen this spring has produced her nicest foal a chestnut colt by Shut Out at Cy Whites Plum Lane Farm Sir Gallahad m already has two 1943 twoyearold winners including a world recordholder from just 12 registered foals of 1946 Mrs John Payson Adams is a nominator to Arlington stakes and intends to be present for the Keeneland Sales The air mail service orig ¬ inated at Belmont Park in 1918 Brownie Leach has returned from New York to attend details of staging the yearling auc ¬ tions
