* * - - JUDGES STA N D *y charles hatton DETROIT, Mich., June 1.— Clarence Hartwick, who has a division of his small string here, tells us that Sickles Image now is at Arlington, where she is pointing for the Cleopatra. Meanwhile he is shipping his stud of four mares from Kentucky to his 160-acre farm, 40 miles north of the Detroit track. -They include Ariel Image, who is believed to be in foal to With Pleasure. "She has been barren three years," he observes, "and last season I sent her to the University of Michigan, where they worked on her 60 days. I would think she might have a runner bjr With Pleasure." Incidentally, he adds that Sickles Image isnt the only foal by her dead sire, Sickletoy, as it has been reported. "Theres one other," he said. "A three-year-old gelding called Sickle Star. He was offered to me at Hot Springs last winter. I dont think he has started. He .flipped over in the gate at Randall last season, was scratched and didnt run." Though Hartwick calls his popular trouper Sickles Image, he says that actually she is the image of her dam, a mare he bought very reasonably, along with another named Joss Stick, from H. P. Bonner some years ago. Joss Stick now has a two-year-old Equifox colt named Son Joss. "Ariel Image had speed but could stop," Hartwick recalls, "until one day I ran her at Hot Springs. She stumbled and almost went down, got up and came from behind and finished third. After that she always came from behind and would go a mile and a sixteenth. I tried to sell her once for 00, before she showed anything. After she did, I lost her riere at the Detroit Fair Grounds for ,000, and took her back for ,600. I tried to sell Sickles Image for ,500 before I saw her as a yearling. If anybody had taken me up, I would be ready to do a high dive off the Detroit bridge." AAA Hartwick remains unconvinced the colts can beat Sickles Image, and he is "Sorry I couldnt run her in. the Derby. She was sick the day of the Derby Trial, in which I planned to tighten her for the Derby, and I spent exactly 00 for penicillin that week. She still" wasnt at her best for the Oaks, but she ran third and gave the first two weight." Sickles Image then was stopped, did nothing for a week, ran second to Jennie Lee Sickles Image Points for Cleopatra Hartwick Praises Lindheimer Program Madden Pacing Jockeys at Detroit Park TRPB Credited With Assist in Michigan * • in the Armed Forces Purse the first time she had a saddle on her back. "There are six stakes in which she can run at Arlington and Washington,r the Michigan horseman observes. "Its a great program for fillies and mares, and that Matron is 0,000." He has a notion the eligibles on the grounds early may have some advantage over those shipping big distances for these races. Hartwick attributes much of Sickles Images consistent form to her disposition. "She is a good doer and all tracks look alike to her," he declares. "I believe I could stand her right in the aisle of a passenger plane to ship and she wouldnt bother anyone. Those fillies that wash and fret arid have to lean on a pony might run a big race once in a while, but they cant take it like a high class mare." Sickles Image may lend her box office appeal to a Hazel Park race later in the summer, next winter returning to Los Angeles for Santa Anita. - A A A Darrell Madden is setting a fast pace for rival jockeys at Detroit, and has gained a large following that is helping the handle." Madden rode for Dixiana at Chicago last summer and has given first call on his services to the Shaffer and Neumann string for this meeting. Two years ago, he won New England Sports Writers* award as the sports figure who made the most outstanding coirieback of the season. Madden is 28, married, expects an heir or heiress in October arid comes from Ontario, Ore., by way of Richmond, Calif . He is of Scotch, Irish, Dutch descent. He rode four winners on one card earlier in the week, and recalls that he once rode six in a day somewhere, though he now is a little vague on the details. Madden is at the top of his form just now and handrides a strong finish. His foremost rival is Tommy Barrow, who was the leader here and at HazelPark last year. Barrow is 19, a product of Arcadia, Fla., and rides for the Hoosier horseman, C. C. Kranz. He learned about horsebacking in quarter horse races about the Everglades State. Detroit doesnt have many apprentice jockeys this summer, perhaps because the new rule permits only one allowance of five pounds. AAA The Thoroughbred Racing Protective Bureau is a strong arm of racing law enforcement, and it has been most helpful here in Michigan this new season. The Midwest division supplied information concerning an undesirable who had petitioned for the restoration of a license, further requested the opportunity to appear in any hearing in the case. The TRPBs data and aggressiveness ended the matter. It now is represented here by Joe Korjenek, who made some airtight cases at New Orleans Fair Grounds last winter, and last summer at Randall Park made sure that all the equipment horses carried was that on the program. Many were skeptical of the TRPB when it was formed, and were resentful of the introduction of the Bertillon- System. But this observer thought then it was one of the best moves the TRA made, and we are of the same opinion still. Few commissions have the funds to conduct investigations, and stewards often would have to go far afield to obtain sufficient evidence. The TRPB now handles the policing of a number of member tracks, among them New Orleans Fair Grounds, Centennial Park, Playf air, Longacres, Delaware Park and all the California tracks. AAA Turf ana: "I hope she will make us both proud of her," John Hertz said of Risque Ma, produced from a mating suggested by this observer. Charley Whittingham improved -her with blinkers. . .Mrs. Lou Smith is aiding the Crippled Childrens Non-Sectarian Fund. We learn that on Mothers Day she visited Kennedy Memorial Hospital with 125 boxes of cookies, 125 ice creams and two radios . . . A. J. Boyle is pleased with the steady growth of patronge at Waterf ord Park. The public in the area must be educated to the sport. ..Former jockey Roderick Hartwick graduates from high school in a few days, enters Michigan State. . .Detroit may have 400 more stalls, when that is possible . . .E. E. Dale Shaffer tells us of an experiment which may improve stallions that are shy breeders. The live cell count is deliberately reduced to a minimum, after which a reaction sometimes increases it beyond the previous norm for the individual. . .Detroit cards must be completed by,6;30.
