WITH SWORDS began slowly, improved position from the outside throughout, veered in sharply When engaging the leaders in the stretch and drew away after reaching the lead. GRAND DEMAND worked his way up gradually, vi£as in a trifle close between horses in the stretch and outgamed HOWARD DEAR for the place. The latter was on nearly even terms for the lead from the break and faltered nearing the end. SPY RING had no excuse in a good effort. FRIVOLITY weakened in the drive after vying for the lead. WORLDLY WISE lugged in badly in the stretch. TEXAS BLUES lacked room. GOLUPTIOUS was outrun. CIRCLED tired. STAR PRINCE had speed for five furlongs and quit. OFF LINE was far back early, made his bid on the outside in the drive and wore down the leaders. QUEENS CHANT, reserved until leaving the turn, was sent through on the rail to be a sharp factor, bore out in the final furlong and was disqualified. HAM BONE reached a clear advantage in the stretch when SEGMENT quit, then .had to lake up sharply nearing the finish when in close quarters, OVERLOAD, reserved until leaving the turn, was also caught in close quarters between horses in the late stages. ELEVEN-BOY JR. went through on the inside to threaten mildly and hung. VOLO SONG weakened in the drive. SEGMENT gave way after vying for the lead for six furlongs. BAND LEADER, always a sharp factor, went into the lead when ready, withstood a bold challenge from MY GOOD MAN and was drawing clear. The latter, in a good position from the beginning, was on nearly even terms for the lead at the final jump, but was not good enough. PROCEED, rated along early, made Up ground steadily when called upon and closed resolutely. CROONING WIND had no excuse. RANK tired. PALAJA showed little. The latter eased out of close quarters on the rail nearing the turn, came between horses when clear, took command in the stretch and drew nearly clear between calls in the final furlong, then just missed. MARTA drove between horses to be on nearly even terms for the lead and shortened stride in the final furlong. ABBIE CO veered into GOLDJINTOWN nearing the furlong post. The latter was bumped and blocked midway of the drive. EARLY HEATH had good early speed and tired, as did BRENTON LIGHT. MISS JUDEX flashed speed and quit. Scratched— 28403 Spats, 114. STEEL BLUE was rated along while on nearly even terms for the lead, gained a clear advantage under punishment in the stretch, but could not resist the winner.
