Sixteen Now Rated Derby Starters Seaward Tops Sextet Seeking Clark Hill Gails Triumph Still Talk of Town TownCousin Cousin Extremely Doubtful For Race Gushing Oil Works Out Six Furlongs in 112 112By By CHARLES HATTON HATTONCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 Hill Gails smashing perform ¬ ance in the Derby Trial in which he re ¬ duced the Downs mile mark to 135 was a staple of conversation about Derbytown today But if the Calumet Farms rangy bay Santa Anita Derby winner loomed for ¬ midably as an oddson choice in Saturdays 100000 Run for the Roses he was by no means conceded the race itself On the contrary it was decided to start Dixianas Sub Fleet hitherto regarded as a somewhat improbable probable and the Trial did nothing to discourage the stretchrunning Arroz connections The Brian Boru Shag Tails and Kingly camps indicated however they will not be Derby starters Cousin started in the Trial but hardly could be said to have run in it and Alfred Vander bilt flew out of town leaving the final deci sion whether to enter him for the Derby up to trainer BUI Winfrey I could start him but I dont think I will the Derby trainer said saidDefinitely Definitely eliminated in the Trial was C V Whitneys Turks Cap who came out of the race with one shin bucked And this morning trainer Veitch said that his stable mate Cold Command who ran down Hill Gail in a Keeneland race would be a doubtful Derby starter if the weather fore ¬ cast for an inch of rain this weekend materialized and made the track muddy It was pointed out that Cold Command was second to Gushing Oil in the slop at Keene ¬ land but Veitch observed there is a differ ¬ ence in the composition of the two courses and recalled that his charge couldnt couldnti i Continued on Page Three Club Stakes Sam E Wilson Jrs Gushing Oil winner of the Louisiana and Arkansas Derbys and the Blue Grass Stakes was the only Derby hopeful to do anything at all ambitious during training hours this morning A golden sun shone on the Downs course which dockers described as rapid and a large gallery of Louisvillians was on hand to see Gushing Oil go through his paces The chestnut son of Easy Mon went six furlongs bowling along well in hand in 112 His fractions were 47 and 59 Eternal Moon also went six furlongs in more leisurely fashion the split second fraternity catching him in 24 48 and 113 He was not urged at any stage of the move movePerhaps Perhaps overlooked by many of the audi ¬ ence that excitedly rooted Hill Gail home at oddson in the Derby Trial was the fact that Sub Fleet went on out a mile and a quarter in 207 and Arroz the Derby dis ¬ tance in 206 neither of them under a drive Many horses have won the Run for the Roses on final distance trials no more impressive Pintors camp was well pleased with his move between races Tuesday when he moved along with great facility six furlongs in 112 112Happy Happy Go Lucky will be among the last of the Derby probables to work This de ¬ ceptively light made colt was pricked while being shod for the slop that obtained Blue Grass day at Keeneland was a late scratch arid his training was interrupted several days He thus got an enforced freshening H G Bockman the Haltal colts owner and trainer says his charge has not taken a lame step and that he will be drilled five or six furlongs tomorrow morning morningGift Gift Silver Breaks From Gate GateThe The story book horse Gift Silver with ¬ drawn from the Trial broke from the gate and went several casual furlongs this morn ¬ ing He is reported to have rapped himself in a recent move and trainer Jack Perez is giving the leg a ctiance to mend If Gift Silver actually gets to the post for the Sat ¬ urday classic he will be ridden by Warren Perez PerezReturning Returning to Hill Gail the somewhat longtailed Calumet colt came out of the Trial none the worse for wear according to trainer Jones The Missourian was of course pleased with his showing except that he indicated he could wish Hill Gail had a target at which to run instead of making the running at such a swift pace While the Calumet conditioner seems hope ¬ ful a pacemaker will turn up in the Derby field his rivals are even more hopeful that Hill Gail will be kept too busy to have a breather the first part of it Saturday In ¬ deed some observers are a little hopeless there is anything to run with him himJack Jack Hodgins feels the Trial was just what Sub Fleet needed The son of Count Fleet had fined down to some extent since his winning Keeneland race still may not have been thoroughly tightened as he began to limber about the furlong pole in Tuesdays final Derby Preview Following Hill Gails pace six furlongs in 109 around a turn should have been beneficial to his conditioning since he appears to have come out of the race satisfactorily satisfactorilySwoop Swoop Added Probable ProbableA A sort of added starter to the list of probables is the High Tide Stables Swoop a chestnut son of Sky Raider who won a mile and a sixteenth race on Monday at Jamaica with Willie Shoemaker in the stir ¬ rups Indications today were that Swoop will be flown here Thursday for his engage ¬ ment mentIf If the weathermans threat of rain was a little disconcerting to trainer Veitch it wai not to the handlers of Pintor Hannibal Count Flame Master Fiddle Eternal Moon Brown Rambler and Blue Man Also am ¬ phibious are Gushing Oil and Happy Go Lucky LuckyThe The attendance for Tuesdays Trial was some 18000 including many early arrivals for Saturdays Rose Run This suggests that the Derby crowd actually will be the biggest ever particularly if the weather bureau misses its guess Many of the Derby visitors have sought accommodations as far distant as Lexington and French Lick And hundreds more will sleep in the special Derby trains Large business firms have taken over nearby motels The Louisville administration has established one way traffic on main arteries to the course for Derby Day in anticipation of an unprece ¬ dented crush of motorists motoristsBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y April 30 Trainer O C Rasch Jr an ¬ nounced today that he was flying High Tide Stables Swoop to Churchill Downs i tomorrow and would saddle the son of Sky Raider Happy Lark for the Kentucky Derby Swoop won his last start at Ja ¬ maica running a mile and a sixteenth over a sloppy track on Monday
