JUDGES STAND L By Charles Nation Hill Gail OnetoBeat in Run forthe Roses Cousin Now Has Connections Sulking Master Fiddle Descendant of Famed Regret Common Cause Big One That Got Away AwayCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 He is going to have a lot of fun with the Derby field if he runs like that on Saturday Eddie Arcaro grinned upon dis ¬ mounting from Hill Gail after his record performance in the Derby Trial The Newport Kentuckian was a little apologetic to Plain Ben Jones for needlessly winning off so far but once he skipped Mrs Edwin C Hills jaunty name ¬ sake out of the gate running there really was not much else to do except let him bounce and we thought he took all the wraps he could without risking his mount would rap himself This morning it was freely conjectured Hill Gail will be oddson though the weatherman pessimistically predicts an inch of rain this weekend Hill Gail re ¬ minds us a bit of Coaltown in that he looks awfully good breezing on the lead and he can breeze faster than most horses can run Perhaps Ben Jones will think we have an unpleasant memory but the rakish Bull Lea colt did not look quite so invincible when it became neces ¬ sary for his rider to dig into him at Keeneland The 100000 question today concerned Who is there to run with him Per ¬ haps none of them can but Pintor and Hannibal have speed Sub Fleet will be sharper and Cold Command Master Fiddle Blue Man and Arroz can finish In a word we are not pre pared to concede this Derby is a formality though Hill Gail is very definitely theonetobeat Pintor appeared in good fettle working between races Trial Day There is some question if Mrs Scotts 10500 yearling bargain is a mile and a quarter horse but he has a certain nuisance value as Tom Fool discovered in the Wood Pintor which incidentally is Spanish for painter is an aptly named son of Goya n Though he is out of Step ladder a mare said to have been barred from competition be ¬ cause of her tyrannies he is a quiet substantial big colt Only yearling I saw at Saratoga in 1950 I felt I would like to have Cold Commands trainer S E Veitch remarked this morning Meanwhile Cold Command who beat Hill Gail at Lexington is reported at his peak With so much speed and stamina in the field this Derby should be a horse race from the drop of the flag flagThere There are Derby horses every year of course but as one who has been observing them since George Smith won the 1916 renewal this corner finds it difficult to recall many quite like Alfred Vanderbilts colt Cousin In the first place he is considerably more of an enigma to the form students Virtually impossible to train in accordance with any preconceived schedule he nevertheless looks fit enough If he chose to give it the old school try he could be a formidable factor Saturday but Winfrey was so dis ¬ appointed in him yesterday he does not now plan to start him One could hardly blame the trainer for sulking As the capricious bay went past on the course this morning a horseman commented He looks like a large scale Adaris Yes agreed another except that Adaris had some sense Im not sure the firstsreplied he is not too smart Perhaps this is the essential difference between Cuz and the Derby record holder Whirlaway another of late years that was interesting psychologically Chatting of Cousin and other Sagampreans with trainer Billy Win ¬ frey today we learned that Bed o Roses just now is some ¬ thing of a tenderfoot so to speak She seems to have in ¬ herited Rosemonts rather soft hooves and Winfrey ob ¬ serves She went a little tender on them and we are blistering the coronary bands Of course we cant be sure yet when she may race again but we hope to have her up to the Newcastle Handicap at Delaware Park Winfrey always has been especially successful training fillies and mares Dini was his first trainee of any prominence Dis ¬ cussing the Vanderbilt twoyearolds he said that he is especially pleased with Native Dancer a homebred by Polynesian who won the Youthful with such a flourish a few days ago He comes of El Chicos family and appar ¬ ently has the zip to match his pedigree pedigreePedigree Pedigree pundits have for years referred to Regret the only filly to win the Derby as a rank failure in the stud G Brownie Leach the Downs veteran publicist observes that in view ol current events this is a base libel She is the ancestress of Repetoire and Master Fiddle first and second in the last two Wood Memorials And Master Fiddle is my Derby horse A vic ¬ tory for Master Fiddle would have all the more dramatic ele ¬ ments of a good story not only because he traces to Regret but also because it would be the second straight Derby for trainer Sol Rutchick an endorsement of phenothiazine and crown Wal ¬ ter Chryslers success belatedly as a breeder Chrysler invested fabulous sums in bloodstock at North Wales in the hope of pro ¬ ducing horses capable of winning events like the Derby sold Master Fiddle as a foal in hisdispersal Although Master Fiddle was bred in Virginia he was reared at the old Ernst Farm which adjoins Idle Hour near Lexington The steel gray son of First Fiddle is not a brilliant horse but is the sort to rectify any mis ¬ takes takesIf If Cold Command wins the Derby which is not too fantastic sundry Californians will be figuratively kicking themselves When he and others went west with Counter ¬ point last winter it was understood all were for sale with the exception of the 51 Horse of the Year One agent tells us he looked at Cold Command is embarrassed to reflect he could not recommend him They beat him regularly out there he said defensively As recently as two weeks ago at Keeneland his stablemate Common Cause was considered the better prospect for the spring classics Common Cause bruised a heel in his first start hereabout but is reported rounding to nicely with a pos ¬ sibility he could appear for the Preakness though the Belmont of a mile and a half on a mile and a half course is expected to be more suitable for him Indications now are that Gerald Porch will have the mount on Cold Com ¬ mand in Saturdays Derby He and the horse have become quite well acquainted and he was never riding in better form Porch is 24 a native of Akron attended university a couple of semesters and has for several years been one of the ablest of the riders in the Midwest He was on Flyamanita when she became a leading twoyearold filly in 1950 1950Turf Turf ana Hartmann Pauly 62 is preparing to sail May 2 for Finland to ride on the American Olympics team Formerly was
