Death Takes John Daniels Daily Racing FormClocker FormClockerEntered Entered Sport as Rider Then As Trainer Heart Ailment Fatal FatalINGLEWOOD INGLEWOOD Calif May 7 If it be true that real riches can only be measured in friends then John Daniels died a millionaire millionaireThe The diminutive nationally known clocker for DAILY RACING FORM passed away at his Inglewood home this morning from a heart ailment Johnny had been seized with a heart attack last December 10 while in church At that time the plucky little gentleman was not expected to live and three times last rites were admin ¬ istered However he fought back like a thoroughbred and improved to such a de ¬ gree that he was going to take the chart call of the races at the coming Hollywood Park meeting meetingFuneral Funeral services to be announced later will be held from the Hardin and Flanagan mortuary in Inglewood with interment probably in Cincinnati Daniels is survived by his wife Elizabeth ElizabethDaniels Daniels was one of the men who made madeContinued Continued on Page Eight Death Takes John Daniels Daily Racing FormClocker FormClockerEntered Entered Sport as Rider Then As Trainer Heart Ailment Fatal FatalContinued Continued from Page One Oneracing racing great in its golden age an era when men of great stature and great horses dominated the then comparatively small turf world worldDaniels Daniels was born at Sheepshead Bay New York about 55 years ago He was orphaned and through circumstances came to the race track as a youngster He was apprenticed to the late Col E R Bradley at Idle Hour Farm FarmColonel Colonel Bradley saw that we ate well that we went to school and that we learned about horses Daniels once said His high standards and principles were taught us as part of the farm routine and these principles were to prove the founda ¬ tions of my life lifeDaniels Daniels later became a jockey and rode at most of the principal tracks in the United States Canada and Mexico He adopted Kentucky as his native state and when his riding days were over became a trainer He was a good one too He was associated for a long time with the stable of H P Headley and for that owner sad ¬ dled such horses as Mike Hall and Handy Mandy When trainer of the Southland Stable he developed and raced the great stakes horse Playtime One of his best known scores came when he saddled Mike Hall to win the Washington Handicap at Laurel in 1928 In later years he trained for several stables including the Valdina Farms and Riverland Stable StableDaniels Daniels came to DAILY RACING FORM some 10 years ago as a member of the track crew and later joined the staff of dockers In addition to tabbing workouts for DAILY RACING FORM he also was on the staff of dockers at all major California tracks tracksDaniels Daniels was widely known and loved on the turf for his wit and coining of colorful phrases plus his ability to reminisce about the early days of hardship when getting to the next town was often a struggle Chicken today feathers tomorrow could have been the title of his lifes story CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 7 Officials turfmen and members of the press were saddened here today to learn of the death of Johnny Daniels former turfman and in recent years a mem ¬ ber of this newspapers staff Daniels was well known throughout Kentucky and en ¬ joyed a wide circle of Blue Grass friends during his lifetime BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 7 Members of the racing fraternity at this track were shocked to learn of the death of Johnny Daniels nationally known clocker who passed away on theWest Coast this morning Old timers hereabouts re ¬ member Daniels as a jockey and trainer on eastern and midwestern tracks several decades ago
