CONNORS CORNER By Chuck Connors BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 7 They say that records are made to be broken and more than likely it is true However how come that expression The race track and sporting world in gen ¬ eral has a terminology of its own sharp and witty Many new ex ¬ pressions have been born in recent years which are now part of the accepted language of the turf The lan ¬ guage of the race track has been the same over a long time with one exception Photo finish Well everyone knows how that originated but getting back to records the swarthyskinned fellow from Cincinnati thats where he was born might establish another one this coming weekend Arcaro as everyone knows racked up his fifth Derby score last Saturday and its a cinch that it will stand for a long time unless Mr Arcaro can set a new one next year Well thats Kentucky and this weekend Arcaro will be seeking a score in the Withers He has won this important stake more times than any other jockey in his ¬ tory He can turn back the pages of Withers history and find his name five times His first success was on Corydon owned by Greentree back in 1940 Then came a gap of six years before he ac ¬ counted for his second and that was on Hampden owned by Foxcatcher Since then he drove Battlefield Hill Prince and Olympia to the finish line lineA A A A AWhile While the Withers is lacking the glamor that surrounds the Derby Preakness or Belmont yet it is an important stake It was named for David D Withers who back in the long ago fathered some ideas relative to racing and handicapping that proved successful and he was also the uncle of the late George Bull Getting back to the records you have to go back to the 20s to find a rider dominating the picture like Eddie has in recent years This fellows name was Earl Sande and he won the Withers four times on Zev Bracadale Haste and Chance Shot Come Saturday Arcaro may hang up a new record for it seems thats all he is doing this year yearA A A A AHarry Harry Goldstein the Miami Beach Hotel man showed up for a few days He hopes to persuade spme of Belmonts regulars that the summer months in the Florida metrop ¬ olis are attractive despite the lack of Simmons were discussing the Chicago strike and both pointed out to your correspondent that they could not be blamed for the situ ¬ ation Troutt cited a telegram in which it was said that he had man who races under the nom de course of the Apheim Stable is a regular these after ¬ noons Syl Veitch with the C V Whit ¬ ney horses came in from Louisville Ky He will likely have a starter in the Withers on the weekend Trainer Johnny Theall is pleased over the success of Parading Lady in the Acorn and is of the opinion the longer the route the more the filly will im ¬ prove Owner Joe W Brown from New Orleans is due later in the meeting One of Eddie Arcaros first acts on his return from Louisville was to visit Irving Phillips before he died Phillips attended to many of the riders financial af fairs Charlie McAdam the horse not the advertising man for whom he was named is the choice of quite a few keen observers as the one likely to wind up as the best threeyearold threeyearoldA A A A AJockey Jockey Gerald Porch has given second call on his services to C V Whitney First call is held by Clyde Troutt trainer for Eugene Constantin the Texas oil man Mrs H O Simmons is recovering from bruises suffered in a recent auto accident A fivecar tie up on the Merritt Parkway inflicted rips and wrist injuries Bernard Baruch the elder statesman will be on hand for the Withers and may be prevailed upon to visit Pimlico for the Preakness A couple of veterans hooked up the other afternoon and tossed around a few stories Jockey Jimmie DeWitt and the onetime ring idol Tony Canzoneri Jockey Henry Schab who journeyed to New Jersey for some engagements returned here Bat ¬ tlefield the big horse in the G D Wide ner menage was returned to the farm by trainer Bert Mulholland The noise and I excitement of the race track upsets this I fellow Trainer Bill Booth reported that Jet A Dandy bucked his shins in the Swift which accounted for his failure Appren ¬ tice Ray Zanelli left for Boston to attend the funeral of his uncle Vincent Lodi an owner and trainer Trainer Jimmy Cole man transferred the Max Gluck horses from Aqueduct to Jamaica Ben Whitaker is doing nicely at Dallas Texas according to trainer Jimmy Conway and if his health permits will be headed this way when the weather gets warm
