giant pacer owned by Frank Marino and L L Blackburn an ¬ nexed Tuesday feature the St Charles Stake Pace at the customary mile distance in high ¬ ly commendable fash ¬ ion having been forced to race on the outside most of the trip and to take up momentarily when in close quarters on the backstretch But once Jake Mahoney had clear sailing with the bulky son of Kings Counsel there was no denying his tremen ¬ dous late speed It was the second win in as many races for Kings Ale this year and his time of 207 was an improvement of twofifths of a second oyer his mark set on April 23 Jake Mahoney with this vic ¬ tory his eighth moved into second place in the driver standings tied with Dee Stover StoverKings Kings Ales margin of victory was but a neck over Victory Scott Clarence Curtis who made his seasonal bow in this race while former worlds cham ¬ pion Buckeye Grattan was within half a length of the winner in third spot both the runnerup and the show horse showing excellent efforts Kings Ale was the fifth winning favorite on Tuesdays ninerace program his backers receiving 420 straight straightHoward Howard Beissinger scored a triple victory Tuesday if one includes the schooling race preceding the regular card In this non betting race the versatile Ohio horseman started his homebred threeyearold filly Lover by Worthy Boy Libra thus a three quarter sister to Beissingers good aged trotter Argo Volo against seasoned older trotters and the brown filly broke her maiden at first asking in 215 Immedi ¬ ately after the race Beissinger received an offer from C F Staley Hoosier patron for Lover and the filly changed barns to be trained from now on by Gene Riegle In the fourth race Beissinger guided another threeyearold filly Dorothy Queen owned by C V Harris of Jackson Tenn to a maiden victory in what was the third start for the young pacer Everett Sherrys for ¬ mer freeforall pacer Red McKlyo an 11yearold gelding in rare form after a years layoff gave Howard his third op ¬ portunity Tuesday to visit the winners cir ¬ cle Although starting from the outside post position Big Red was already in the twohole after the first turn to win easily in 207 fastest time of the night nightWith With this victory his tenth at the meeting Beissinger now is the leading Maywood Park driver a position he is very likely to maintain because many choice mounts are at his disposal when ¬ ever he doesnt have a horse of his own public stable in a race Beissinger is not only an accomplished trainer and one of the best race drivers in this part of the country he is also a breeder of consid ¬ erable merit operating a nursery with shrewd Charly King in his home state of Ohio Beissinger bred and raised Kings Ale and also Ray Gillilans good pacer King Gaines He raced both son of Kings Counsel during their twjoyear old form and sold them later as three yearolds to their present owners Kings Ale fetching 6000 and King Gaines 4500 Not only have Kings Ale and King Gaines won themselves out but have proved to be bargains Beissinger a few seasons ago also sold Hals Bru ¬ nette dam of Kings Ale together witji her weanling City Counsel full brother to Kings Ale for 2000 to Kentucky breeders W P and K M Little of Lex ¬ ington who in turn sold City Counsel as a yearling at the Tattersall sales for 1900 to Mrs R G Probst of Champaign ChampaignDuring During the winter training session at Orlando Fla City Counsel caught the eye c trainer Del Miller who offered Mrs Probst 15000 for him acting as agent for Leonard Sasso of Pittsburgh So City Coun ¬ sel came under the tutelage of the Pen ¬ nsylvania trainer Shipped to Yonkers Raceway City Counsel won at first asking with Jimmy Jordan at the reins for an early return on the sizable investment investmentSaunders Saunders Mills stable apparently have taken over at Hazel Park where Castle ton Farms left off last season he Ohio outfit winning freeforall events thee both in the pacing and trotting division with Thunderclap and Elby Hanover respectively Trainer Jack Williams Sr a winner of several races at Santa Anita a few weeks ago also is racing in great form at Detroit scoring a triple victory with Scotty
