PARK Elmont L I N Y May 6 The 20000 International Steeple ¬ chase which will have its 57th running on Saturday will actually live up to its name for the first time this year though many foreignbred horses have won the about two mile test since its inaugural at Bel ¬ mont Park in 1905 Several months ago S Bryce Wins president of the National Steeplechase and Hunts Association under which all jumping races are conducted conceived the idea of inviting a representa ¬ tive selection of leading English Irish and French chasers to compete in this years International The idea of course was to make the Belmont Park event an equiva ¬ lent for the jumpers of Laurels brilliantly successful Washington D C International Unable to go to Europe himself Wing obtained the services of Stephen C Clark Jr as his deputy in this ambassadorial task Despite sundry mishaps and injuries to invitees three candidates from England and a like number from Ireland arrived by air early this week to take part in the stake Clark was less successful in obtain ¬ ing French candidates the Gallic owners declaring that they were not given suffi ¬ cient time to make a decision to ship their horses for the race raceCammell Cammell Laird Possibility PossibilityThere There is a possibility that one horse who did all of his racing in France until this week but was bred in England and is now owned by a Canadian may be in the race This is Mrs Vernon G Cardys Cammell Laird who looked like a probable winner of his American debut on Monday until he overjumped the 10th fence and lost his footing in the slippery rainsoaked going This son of Scottish Union won a major chase at Auteuil as a threeyearold last fall and has impressed most horsemen as a better prospect for our fences than any of the English and Irish invaders He was originally invited to the International as a French candidate but was later pur ¬ chased by Mrs Cardy and if he starts will go as a North American horse horseTwo Two of the three Irish invaders won their last starts In View a sevenyearold who is not eligible to the stud book races for Leslie Brand a Belfast businessman who has only been in racing for about six months The brown gelding won a three mile event chase at the Ward Union Hunt on April 20 while he won a threemile event at Baldoyle on March 17 Pat Doyle a County Wexford jockey will ride In View on Saturday He is the midwinter midwinterPrince Prince of Denmark who will be ridden by the only amateur in the race Bunny Cox boasts a splendid record this year with three wins and three seconds in six starts Miss Paget incidentally is a cousin of John Whitney who has tried several times to win the English Grand National r The Americanowned horses expected to face the invaders in the International rep jresent the best of our current steeple ¬ chasers including Mrs J R H Thourons The Mast who was voted steeplechaser of he year in 1953 and Brookmeade Stables His Boots a twotime winner of the Bel hont Grand National James F McHughs improving Sundowner who won here on Monday and L H Nelles Extra Points bvho has won both over brush and hedges kt this meeting are also probables in what shapes up as by far the most interesting steeplechase of many years yearsLike Like the Washington D C Interna ¬ tional Saturdays event has aroused as much if not more interest across the At ¬ lantic as here on Long Island For the future success of the race it is to be hoped that the invaders turn in sufficiently good races to encourage others to come back next year However they are facing a much more difficult task than the flat runners coming to Maryland as our steeplechases are run at a totally different pace and our fences while lacking the picturesque elements of those abroad are actually more severe especially as the final obstacle is a stiff fence not a hedge as is customary overseas
