* + I EARNINGS OF EIGHT VETERAN EQUINE ARISTOCRATS 4. Of horses six years old and over that have raced this year a good eight stand out pre-eminent in respect to money won in the course of their racing. Of the eight Ballot hud won up to the first of August the imposing total of 54,545, giving him fourth place among the great money-winners of the American turf. These winning more are Douiino. 1198*660; Sysonby. 84.4:58, and Colin. 80,912. It is illustrative 0 the singular good fortune of James It. Keeno as a turfman that each of these four great money-gainers raced as his property and reaped their earnings for him. Although unlucky in England last year. Ballot is unquestionably a horse of the highest class and it is more than probable that his ill fortune across the water was largely due to Sam Darlings failure to understand the horse and train hiin as James Rowe Would have done. Next to Ballot among the veterans conies Montgomery with 4,540. a regular smasher when a three-rear-eld. winner at that age of the Crescent City Derby, Jockey Club Weight-for-Age Hace. Commonwealth Handicap, Broadway Stakes. Baychestcr Stakes and of the Barns Handicap when* a four-year-old with the highest weight ever carried successfully in that chief of California races — 128 pounds. A stayer and a thoroughly game horse. Montgomery baa declined somewhat in sjieod, but is still able to win good races and liKejy to continue so for some time to come. Hut little behind Montgomery in winnings is Barney Schreibers pride. Jack Atkin. with .:.. 110 to his credit. Next to Kosobon. Jack Atkin is the lest sprinter of recent years and as capable of doing a mile at the highest rate of speed as any of the shorter distances over which he has won fame. Tike Roseben, he can carry great Weight witli indifference, tint he has been a much-raced horse and this year lias given tm-oiistakable indications of having grown track weary and has been beaten now and then by horses he would have run away from a year ago. It is said that he will be retired to the stud at the end of this year, a boon he has richly earned. Another Schreilicr-bred veteran is fourth in this list of six, being the 1007 Suburban Handicap winner. Ne.tlon, and one of Sains best sous. A horse of slow development, Nealon was no more than an ordinary two-year-old, but was a good three-year-old and as a four-year-old was in the lirst light of the liest handicap horses. Unlike his relative. Jack Atkin. while he could run fast, staying instead of great sprinting speed was his best characteristic. He fell lame at the end of his career as a four-year-old and was retired for two years. He was trained last winter and won two races, but fell lame again and will now probably he retired to stud duty. Goldsmith was one of the splendid band of two-year-olds raced by William C. Whitney in 1001 and that year won the Flash Stakes and Saratoga Special at Saratoga and the Junior Champion Stakes at Graves-end, Along with Endurance by Right and other crack youngsters Goldsmith fell sick with influenza in his winter quarters at Westbury in the interval between his two and throe-year-ohl form and was so affected by it that lie was not able to fulfill the promise of his brilliant two-year-old racing. After being sold from the Whitney stable he was in obscurity for a time, but turned up at New Orleans in 1906-0 and ran respectably. Last winter he was raced at Tampa and won three little purees. He is a grandly-bred horse and should be ill some breeders possession. Oiseau was a sensational and wonderfully good two-year-old and a good winner when a three-year-old. Then he went wrong and has been of little account since. He was taken over to England in 1000 aiid raced fairly well for trainer .lesson, but won nothing. He did no better in Florida last winter. Quite a remarkable old gelding is Bad News and many a good turn has he done owner Bradlev. For a horse confined mainly to purse racing his winnings are of quite an unusual amount and he has already demonstrated this year that he is still able to win in good style. Goad enough to run third in the last American Derby. Rapid Water is the best horse sired by Haggins Imparted stallion. KapaUo, and when at the top of his form was a high-class racer.
