SUCCESSFUL TRAINERS IN KENTUCKYS FOREMOST RACE -p Louisville, Ky., April 29. The death of John Hall, the race horse trainer, at Douglas Iark the other day, emphasized how quickly are forgotten those men who prepare and send to the post the winners of the Kentucky Derby. The horse crowned witli the Derby wreath lives forever in turf history. Ills achievements are rarely erased from memorys pages and the same is true of tlie owner of a Derby victor, but how many can recall the identity of the men who have spent tireless weeks fitting their charges for a great struggle and Kentuckys foremost honor and glory in the realm of the thoroughbred the Derby? There are today twenty-one living turfmen who have saddled winners of tlie Kentucky Derby. They are- Tice Hutsell, trainer of Fonso, winner in 1SS0. .lames Rowe, who saddled Hindoo in tlie following year. G. R. Morris, trainer of Apollo, the winner in 1SS2. John A. Campbell, who won witli Macbeth II. in 1SSS. John Rodegap, who sent Spokane to tlie post in 1SS9. Edward Corrigan, who owned and trained Riley, winner in 1S!0. John II. Morris, who trained Azra, G. It will be observed that tlie only two trainers that ever saddled two Derby winners are dead. "Dud" Allen, one of them, was colored, and John McGinty was a successful jockey before he became a trainer. Of the twenty-one surviving trainers that earned the distinction of sending to the post a Derby winner. John A. Campbell and Eugene Leigh are still pursuing their vocation, hut are abroad. Eighteen of tlie trainers are still identified witli racing and one, Frank C. Van Meter, is out of the sport. He is in the realty business in California. Those who will lie connected with racing this spring at Churchill Downs include tlie following: Edward Corrigan, John Rodegap, Will McDaniel, J. C. Calm, diaries II. Hughes. T. C. McDowell, Peter Coyne, AV. II. Fizer, J. R. Respess and George Ham. John II. Morris and Robert Walden are maintaining breeding studs, the latter at Middle-burgh, Md., and the former at Spring Station, Ky. James Rowe, the only one not mentioned alxivo. witli the exception of Green R. Morris and Albert Simons, who figure as owners at Pinilico, up to last season trained for James R. Keene and will this season train for II. P. Whitney. To review tills list of dead and living turfmen is to recall great races and brilliant racers connected witli tlie Kentucky Derby. The name of Edward Corrigan figures as the man who at one time controlled more racing property and owned u greater stable of horses than any turfman of his time. There is "Johnny" Campbell, who gained fame on the trotting turf as lie did on the running tracks. Re-fore lie saddled Macbeth II. in tlie Kentucky Derby he campaigned Rich Rail through the Grand Circuit and drove him in many events. As a trainer in Germany and other foreign countries, Campbell also made his mark. T C. McDowell is another college-bred owner and trainer of horses. He is a great grandson of Henry Clay. Green R. Morris, with the exception of James Rowe, who also figures in this list, probably trained more horses than any other living turfman. Will McDaniel is another. He is tlie only trainer who, in tlie same season, won the Tennessee, Kentucky and American Derliys witli three different horses Calhoun, Lookout and - -Roundle-ss. Those who have finished lifes race have filled pages of "turf history. James Murphy, Ryron Mc-Clelian, Robert Tucker, George II. Rico and John McGinty will exist for all time in tlie annals of racing. Murphy developed such stars as Faraday. Wadsworth. Anna, Flrenzi, Salvator and others of lenown. lie left a big estate. McClellan was one of the most versatile trainers the turf lias known. Sallie McClellan, Prince Lief and the mighty Henry of Navarre were three illustrious horses that he developed and trained. Several of the finest structures in Lexington belong to the McClellan estate. Few trainers were tlie equal of Robert Tucker, whose linai great achievement was his training of Rroom-stick, which still holds today the American record of 2:02J at a mile and a quarter, the Derby distance. Rico and McGinty were both" as successful as any of tin; trio named. Of tlie dead colored trainers turf history will always have a page for Ansell and "Rrown" Dick. The latter will live forever by reason of the achievements or Ren Rrush, which lie developed. Ansell and the racer, Tom Rowling, will bo linked in the chapter of the worlds turf records.
