SOME OLDTIMERS OF THE TURF Latonia Ky June 23 DOS Dressen one of the inside otiice men in the administration building at Latonia has had given him by a friend an ancient propurn of the spring race meeting held at the Bnckeve course In Cincinnati in 18t S The book Kives the stake raees run at the meeting which was of live days duration with three races the greatest numlier run on any afternoon of that meeting The program shows 1 II Smith as secretary and of the man nominator of horses in the stakes at that meeting only two are now alive namely George Cadwalader and John Loud both of whome are in dailv attendance at the Latonia track the former being at present in the service of the Ialinili Jockey Club ClubWith With the exception of W T Woodard Cad ¬ walader is probably now the oldest turfman at the Latonia course He was a famous race rider in his day and rode races for Joe Bosworth as arly as 1S53 He won his lirst stake race for It A Mexander before the Civil War ami in re ¬ calling this incident a few days since mentioned it as the first lime be had any money of much amount Alexander giving him 300 for his ride in that race From a jockey ho graduated into a skillful trainer and in the long ago raced nianv good horses oue of which Pompey Payne was sold for 10000 a big price in those days This veteran horseman still enjoys good health and looks like he has a chance with his old friend of other times James Shy to live out a full century centuryJohn John Loud is another veteran that is still in good health who figured among the nominators in the stakes at the Buckeye track in lSt 3 though the best horso he ever raced was the staying muie LIda Stanhope which did not come to the tracks to race until the early eighties
