SOME ACCOUNT OF THE GRAND UNION HOTEL STAKES AND THE MERCHANTS AND CITIZENS HANDICAP, WHICH ARE THE LEADING ATTRACTIONS AT SARATOGA TODAY Three worth-winning stake races, one jumping and two on the flat, are the big attractions gracing the Saratoga card of this afternoon. They are the Beverwyck Steeplechase, Grand Union Hotel Stakes and the Merchants and Citizens Handicap. The Grand Union Hotel Stakes is an important affair, being of the guaranteed value of 0,000, and is for two-year-olds at three-quarters of a mile. It is usually contested by the best of each year, and numbers such superb creatures as Highball, Colin, Iron Mask, Hourless and Sun Briar in its list of winners. This year it had 156 nominations, of which 133 are still eligible to start. The condensed history of this race is: 1ear. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Val. Time. 1901 King Hanover T. The Merchants and Citizens Handicap was first run at a mile and a sixteenth and was won by Walter Rollins good racer, Herbert. The next year it was made a mile and an eighth, and Herbert won it again. The only other horse to equal Herberts feat was Sir John Johnson, which won the race in 1909 and repeated in 1910. After Herberts two victories had been followed by those of Hermis in 1903 and Molly Brant in 1904 the distance of the race was increased to a mile and three-sixteenths in 1905, at which it has remained to this day. The fact that such other stars of racing as Outcome, Running Water, Dandelion, Sam Jackson, Roamer, The Finn, Clematis and Midway won this race illustrates the fact that the Merchants and Citizens has always been fought out by high-class handicap horses, although not a race of high value. Last year the mighty Cudgel was a hot favorite, but third to Midway and Eyelid was the best he could do. It had eighty-three entries this year, and here is its record: Tear. First. Age. Jockeys. Wt.
