James Bntwcll. one of the real veterans of tho American turf, has an enviable record to show for his fifteen consecutive years of active participation in our racing. His name first appeared in our records in 1007 and he has seen continuous service each year since, even in 1918, when he enlisted to fight for Incle Sam in the Great World War. During those fifteen years Butwell has had 0,254 mounts and ridden 1.20S winners and won over ,000,000 in stakes and purses. Strange to relate, it was not until 1020 that Butwell realized the ambition of every rider to head the American jockey list of the year. In 1909 he was third to Vincent Powers and George Archibald with 153 winning mounts, one more than he had in 1920 when he attained the premier honors. In 191.! Butwell finished in fourth place with 144 winning mounts, one less than to the credit of C. Gross, who had oser 200 more mounts than Butwell. That and the following year were Butwells best from a percentage standpoint, the true test of a jockeys ability. In 1914 his percentage was .25 and .23 in 1915. In eight of the fifteen years Butwell has been in the saddle his percentage of winning mounts has been .20 or over and his general average for the entire period is .20, a creditable record indeed. Here is Butwells record from 1907 to 1921 inclusive, a record of which he may justly feel proud: Year. Mts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unp. P.C.
