TANFORAN MEETING BEGINS Cool Weather Prevails for Opening of Rebuilt California Course. Visitors Treated to Unusual Sight of Horses Slaking Sort of Detour to Reach the Finishing Line. SAN BRUNO, Calif., April 20 Cool weather prevailed for the opening of the rebuilt Tanforan plant Saturday afternoon and the patrons making the trip to the track witnessed the unusual sight of the horses making a sort of detour to reach the finishing line. The racing strip, which was" refilled from the eighth pole to the sixteenth pole next to the fail Friday, was not quite ready for racing on that particular patch and temporary railings were placed on the outside of it-, thereby forcing the horses to finish in the middle of the track. Despite the fact that it was found necessary to make alterations to the track the fields taking part in the opening days program were fairly large and capable of providing some good sport. The Tanforan management announced Saturday morning that every horse going to the post Saturday and Monday would be insured against injury, the cost of the insurance to be borne by the association. Horses will continue to be insured until the racing strip is declared perfectly safe by a committee of horsemen. With the assurance that they would be protected in the event of injury to their horses, owners Saturday morning entered liberally for Monday and the entries closed on time. Mondays feature will be the Colma Graded Handicap Class E at five and one-half furlongs.
