Meets My Request nd Two Others in Withers All Four Take Up 126Pound Imposts in Belmonts Mile Jestf Also Renew Juvenile JuvenileBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L L N Y May 28 Belmont Park begins a gala weekend of sport with renewals of the 25000 Withers Mile and the 10000 Juve ¬ nile Stakes tomorrow following with the 50000 Suburban Handicap at a mile and a quarter on the Memorial Day holiday Only four have been named for the With ¬ ers Calumet Farms Coaltown having frightened away most of the speedier three yearolds while the more courageous of those thought to be stayers will be en ¬ deavoring to cope with his even more bril ¬ liant stablemate in the Jersey Stakes at Garden State Park ParkAll All four in the Withers carry the same burden of 126 pounds Coaltown has equaled the Hialeah sixfurlong record and set a mark for a mile and a furlong at Keeneland in the course of his brief career which did not begin until January of this year and is marred by only one defeat at the illustrious heels of Citation in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby There is more than a faint chance that Coaltown will add a new mark to his collection by shading the 134 Belmont Park record setby Count Fleet as a twoyearold in 1942 The son of Bull Lea stepped seven furlongs in 1 23 in the Swift Stakes last week over a track that was lesj fast than it is expected to be tomorrow tomorrowBeaten Beaten in Derby and Swift SwiftThe The three daring rivals to the Warren Wright colt are Ben F Whitakers My Request who finished more than three lengths behind him in the Derby wheri he was not at his best but trailed by six in the Swift when apparently much less nerv ¬ ous before the race though still looking a bit washy C V Whitneys Vulcans Forge and King Ranchs Better Self In any ordi ¬ nary year these three colts would enjoy a very high sfanding My Request won five stakes as a twoyearold arid captured both divisions of the Experimental Handicap and the Wood Memorial before journeying to Kentucky He is undoubtedly a better colt than he showed in the Derby and Swift arid may at last be able to force Coaltown to run in near record time timeVulcans Vulcans Forge turned in a surprisingly good race to such second as there was be ¬ hind Citation in the Preakness though failing to menace the champion seriously His most distinguished feat was a victory in the Champagne last fall Trainer Syl Veitch has said that Vulcans Forge is a poor workhorse requiring frequent racing to be at his best which may explain his presence in the Withers as the Belmont Stakes at a mile and a half is his main spring pbjective pbjectiveBetter Better Self was the leading two yearold of 1947 until midsummer when he failed badly in the Hopeful Stakes at Belmont and in the Pimlico Futurities He won his seasonal debut in the Paumonok impres ¬ sively but has raced poorly since that ef ¬ fort and was last in the Preakness PreaknessCoaltown Coaltown will probably be about the minimum or lto20 tomorrow with mi ¬ nus pools in prospect both in the straight and place divisions Newbold Leroy Pier son will again be on the favorite while Charley LeBlanc is to ride My Request and Shelby Clark will guide Vulcans Forge No
