REFLECTIONS 1 By Nelson Dunstan Seven Important Stakes to Be Run Today 4 Citation in Jersey Coaltown in Withers Delaware Park Opens 30Day Meet Today Stymie Topweight 128 in Suburban Cap CapNEW NEW YORK N Y May 28 28Seven Seven major race tracks will offer seven important stake events tomorrow And on Monday there will be eight stake events at the same tracks In the East racing fans will view the sport at Belmont Garden State Park Suffolk Downs and Delaware Park which opens its 30day meeting tomorrow The Calumet colts will be in action tomorrow with Citation in the 50000 Jersey Stakes at Garden State Park and Coaltown in the 25000 Withers at Belmont By tomorrow night the Calumet coffers may be enriched by close to 60000 If not at one of these two eastern tracks there will be one of the biggest upsets since the days of Jim Dandy at Saratoga Citation will be opposed in the and even though Salmagundi the William Hens colorbearer ap ¬ pears to be in the form which carried him to victory in the 100000 Santa Anita Derby we are still of the opinion that the Calumet horse will add to his laurels and also to the bank ac ¬ count of his owner Weeks ago Jimmy Jones had decided that Citation like Sir Barton and Count Fleet should try to win the Withers along with the Triple Crown races but having two champions there was a revision of the nlans nlansA A new addition to the sport tomorrow and a very welcome one will be the opening of the 30day meeting at Delaware Park with the running of the Wilmington Handicap a race for threeyearolds and older horses at six furlongs On Monday the Garden State Park meeting at Camden will come to a close with the running of the Vineland Handicap and on the same day Delaware Park will offer the 10000 Brandy wine Handicap which at one and onesixteenth miles will be for threeyearolds and older horses At the Wilmington track the officials have been at their wits end for the stall space for all the horsemen who have applied There will be more than sufficient horses on hand for wellrounded fields in both the stake events for flat racers and those in the five stakes for steeplechasers Until Monmouth Park opens on June 21 there will be no opposition to the Wilmington course from tracks in New Jersey The second Saturday event will be the 25000 Kent which is exclusively for threeyearolds at a mile and a sixteenth Although the majority of the best threeyearolds now campaigning in the East with the exception of Citation are eligible it is a question how many will respond to the bugle for this The field for the sixtysecond running of the Suburban Handicap does not shape up as formidable as the fields in for ¬ mer years for besides the fact that Armed Blue Border Cosmic Bomb Endeavour H Fervent Phalanx and Rico Monte were declared out of the race it now develops that Talon who was assigned 127 pounds will not be a starter Before the running of the Ballot Purse on Wednesday it was found that the South Americanbred horse who won the Santa Anita Handicap had to be withdrawn due to a leg injury Stymie the worlds money winning champion has been assigned the top weight of 128 pounds and following him are Double Jay 122 Faultless 118 Colosal 117 and then Gallorette and Miss Grillo at 115 each Thirty others are eligible and hav been weighted down as low as 98 pounds the assignment to Stage Bond As the Suburban shapes up on paper Calumet Farms Faultless appears to be Stymies most dangerous rival in this one and onequarter mile race which is regarded as one of the nfost important for hand ¬ icap performers staged in this country Gallorette the hard ¬ hitting W L Brann mare is in the race well with 115 pounds for it was in the Brooklyn Handicap of 1946 that she carried 118 to defeat Stymie who was toting 128 128Stymie Stymie has never been successful in the Suburban Handicap He ran second to Devil Diver in 1945 third to Armed and Reply Paid in 1946 and last year was in the beaten field when Assault was the winner over Nachez and Talon His chances appear brighter this season for he demonstrated in the Ballot Purse on Wednesday that he is in top condition In that race he came from behind as usual even though the early pace was rather slow to run the mile and a furlong in the fast time of 1495 With the earnings of that race he has now reached a total of 849635 and a victory in the Suburbon on Mon ¬ day would boost him close to the 900000 mark He is well weighted for during the past three years no winner has carried less than 130 pounds The most talkedabout Suburban df all time was the 1913 renewal when Whisk Broom II carried 139 pounds to win in the astonishing time of 200 flat That mark has been disputed ever since then but it is still on the books as the fastest Suburban on record and it remained on the books as the fastest mile and a quarter on record until Cover Up equaled the time in the Hollywood Gold Cup last year Assault won the Suburban in 201 In fact during the past 10 years this race has been run in exceptionally fast time with the exception of 1945 when Devil Diver was clocked in 204 204Mondays Mondays Suburban could also be an important race in the life of the grand mare Gallorette who today leads all members of her sex on the worlds moneywinning ladder with a total of 368735 This is just 34700 more than Busher who is second on the list for the members of the weaker sex A victory for Gallorette in the Suburban would boost her earnings to over the 400000 mark and7 while it is never safe to predict that any record will not be broke it might be a long time before another filly or mare topped that figure Gallorette has met the best members of the opposite sex in recent years and she has always given a splendid account of herself Last year she had more than her share of hard luck This year after set ¬ ting the pace she was third to Faultless and Fervent in the Gallant Fox Handicap At the end of this season it is the plan of her owner to breed her to Bull Lea the sensational sire of the threeyearolds Citation and Coaltown The colt or filly which results of that union will be awaited with all the interest that is now shown in Mr Busher the twoyearold brother to Busher who is now in training at Belmont Park
