Jockey Johnny Daly, son of the owner of the horse, had the mount. He was alert at the post and repeatedly tried to beat the barrier. He was cautioned by the starter and when the field was finally sent away, lie was caught unprepared. Before they had gone a half dozen strides, Koekaway was in a jam and Daly was forced to pull up. At the half mile ground he was last, fully a dozen lengths back of the leader.
