PHIL FINCH WINS ST. CHARLES HANDICAP. Jockey McLaughlin Is Punished for Striking Jockey Johnson Rain Falls After Fourth Race. New Orleans, La., January 20. A splendid card and tine weather drew a good crowd to the old track today. The star offering was the St. Charles Handicap at one and one-quarter miles, and it was won by Phil Finch. He easily outclassed the others, notwithstanding the steadying impost of 130 pounds. Twenty-five books were again in line and the volume of business transacted by the layers was of fair proportion. After the fourth race a steady rain began falling, which made the track a bit slow during the last three races. Jockey McLaughlin was suspended by the judges for one week for striking jockey Johnson with his whip after the finish of the sixth race. McLaughlin claimed in explanation that Johnson had deliberately Interfered with his mount Ogontz. Morris L. Hayman was among the arrivals today. He will remain here until his horses are shipped north. The judges did not think H. Alex, who was at first carded to ride Guidlngv Star, sufficiently competent to handle the horse and substituted L. Smith with good results.
