Splendid weather nnd a good card brought a big crowd to Crescent Park this afternon. The track was faster than It has been since the current meeting began. The fjport was first class. Favorites, however, were not as successful as the talent anticipated and their best fancies, St. Valentine and Southern Cross, both at odds-on, were bowled over much to the elation of the bookmakers. Billy Meyers, who has the track in charge this reason, came in for many congratulations after the second race, when the time of 1:03 for the live and n half furlongs was displayed, showing that Colonel White had clipped four fifths of a second from the previous track mark, made by Florentine last year. Tills Is within three-fifths of a second of MeGees American record. W. H. Snyder and Co.r good colt Bertmont demonstrated his quality by taking the Premier Stakes at : ! 1 a half mile in easy fashion from a fair field of colts. Tiiis was the feature offering of the programme and was worth ,050 to the winner. De Oro, trained by Bill Brien for S. T. White, was a starter in the race and considered a strong contender before post time, but a report that lie was ailing caused his price to recede from the opening. He ran as foreshadowed in the betting and after he had finished, examination disclosed that he had a severe case of catarrhal fever. G. C. Bennett, since his arrival, lias gradually Iw-en disposing of his horses. Yesterday he sold at private terms to Scott Laird, Aladdin and Dan Mc-Kenna, and X. Woodworth and Co., Beechwood, Quaint and Trigg Morse. Two others will be shipped to Memphis tomorrow In charge of Charles Howe. This will leave trainer Mulholland only two horses and they will lie disposed of as soon as purchasers for them can be found. Mr. Bennett tried his hand at booking again, Frank Lanterman presiding on the block. Fred Burlew left tonight, accompanied by jockey Frank ONeill for a three weeks trip to Mexico. They will return in time for the running of the Crescent City Derby in which ONeill will have a mount. After The Cures victory he was bid up to ,000, an advance of 00 over his entered price.
