MONTEREYS EASY YICTORY. TAKES PRELIMINARY DERBY OVER SLOPPY TRACK AT CITY PARK. H. Phillips May Ride Jack Dolan Saturday Colloquy Defeats Bertmont at the Old Track New Orleans News. New Orleans, La., March 14. Rain fell In torrents here today, leaving the track sloppy. The feature at City Park was the Preliminary Derby. Six of the hest among the eligibles for the big race of Saturday next went to the post, but five of them might, as well have remained In their stalls, insofar as chances for first money were concerned. Monterey was much the lest in the going and made his opponents look cheap. Kara and Bellindhm were the other winning favorites. It may be that Harry rhillips, who has been out of the saddle for nlwnt a year, will ride Jack Didan in the City Park Derby. "Jack" Phillips had an understanding with Hildebrnnd that, in the event of the hitlers reinstatement by the Jockey Club, he would ride the colt In that race, but after accepting a license from the Western Jockey Club HHdebrand was forced to "fluke" on his agreement with Phillips or become an "outlaw." He "fluked" and has accepted the mount on Hallowmas In tlie Crescent City Derby. Bertmont, considered about the best colt shown at the old track tills season, was beaten a nose by George Holles filly Colloquy In the fourth race this afternoon. She was in receipt of five pounds from Bertmont, including the sex allowance and raced with him all the way. Beatrice II. .showed a great .ir,n of ppeed in the early pact of--tlm- race, but could not keep it up long and so, in the last furlong Bertmont and Colloquy drew .out and raced head and head to the finish, the filly always having a slight advantage. The finish In the mile and a half race was one of the best seen in any of the long distance races this winter, the first four finishing necks apart. Tony Liealzl has announced his retirement from racing and will sell his entire string of horses a week from next Saturday.
