UNDER THE BAN FOE LIFE. PACIFIC JOCKEY CLUB RULES OFF DURNELL AND McCAFFEETY. Not Satisfied With Suspension For One Yoar, Former Takes An Appeal Which Results In Banishment of Both. San Francisco, Cal., March 20. Charles K. Duruell awl John J. McCafTerty, who were each suspended on March 2 by the judges at Ascot Park, for one year, were today ruled off the turf for life by the stewards of the Pacific Jockey Club, which is the supreme governing body of the turf in California. lloth Duruell and McCafTerty have figured in racing in this country for many years and both were former jockeys, McCafTerty one of the best of his Cay. Durncll sought honors abroad and was once under the ban in France, lie claimed that lis had been .1 victim of malice on the part of the starter, lie succeeded In having himself reinstated in 1001, though he had been permitted by the Western Jockey Club to race his horses on its tracks prior to the removal of the ban in France. In partnership with Emll Hcrz he achieved a remarkable success at the Chicago traks, hut lost to the bookmakers practically all lie had gained. This combination was broken and Dumell went it alone until late in the season of 1501, when he established relations with Mont Tennes, the Chicago bookmaker. During the sgason of 1004 the relations between Dumell and MeCafferty were close cnougli to amount to practically a confederacy and the season of 1005 opened in the same way, but when they got to New York and Duruell began losing his grip, seeds of discontent were sown. Durncll and Tennes fell out and Tennes disposed of all of his horses save Big Ben and one or two others which he turned, -over to MeCafferty. From that time grew an enmity bitter enough to result in the downfall of both. Durncll secured powerful financial backing from John W. Gates, it is said and forthwith began his pursuit of McCafTerty. After the close of the season at the New York tracks both shipped their horses Xo Ascot Park and a feudal war such as lias never been known on a racetrack in tills country developed and spread until there was scarce a man at the Los Angeles course who was not identified with one or the other faction. For a time they were content with bidding up and buying each others horses when they were returned winners of selling races or claiming them when they failed to win. Then cainc bitter denunciations and finally charges and counter charges which resulted in a belated investigation and the mellow action of Judge Hamilton and his associates. Duruell, feeling secure within himself and probably nursing the notion that the iuiluence which had once put him in good standing on the tracks of the middle west, would again see him through, appealed ills caso to the Pacific Jockey Club. This prompted the stewards to go deeper than had the officials at Ascot. McCafTerty had taken no appeal, but the finding of the stewards made them equally guilty, hence the ruling of today., Barney Schrcibers great three-year-old, Dr. Gardiner, performed brilliantly in the Futurity Course sprint at Oakland this afternoon. His owner declared that the Bannockburn youngster carried the biggest stable commission that he had wagered in ten years. When J. K. F. was disqualified in the second race in favor of the nominal favorite, Pentagon, there was much rejoicing in the betting inclosure. The stars of the Schrelber establishment will be shipped to Memphis next Sunday. Racing at Seattle will begin on June 20, and continue to September 1.
