ENGLANDS GREAT SOCIAL MEETING OPENS. Danny Maher Pilots Two of the Stake Winners on the First Day at Ascot. London, June 19. The usual brilliant scene attended the opening of the race meeting at Ascot today, though the picturesque royal procession was nlKiiuloned because of the absence of Queen Alexandria, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Connaught. Kiug Edward, who is staying at Windsor for a week, drove with bis guests in carriages through the great park to Ascot. There was a great gathering of Americans and Anglo-Americans to see the racing. Ambassador and Mrs. Reid and Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Longworth lunched with King Edward and afterward watched the races from the .royal bos. The racing was interesting, as in most cases the contests were hard fought and there were several close finishes. Maher, the American jockey, won two races, piloting Lord Roseberys Traquair to victory in the Coventry Stakes, and W. Raphaels My Pet II. in the forty-ninth Ascot Biennial Stakes. "In the race for the Ascot Stakes, the big race of the day, Mr. Singers Pradella was first, Outbreak aecond and Saltpeter third. Twenty-two horses started. Lord Derbys Gourd, the favorite at 9 to 4, was nowhere. The betting against Pradella ,Was 100 to 8.
