GREAT WEEK FOR GRAVESEND LAYERS. The policy of the Jockey Club against the poolrooms in New York has had the effect of turning a greater volume of money Into the betting rings at the New York tracks. The claim that more money is being handled this year than ever before, appears to be thoroughly supported. Until last week, however, the bookmakers it seems were unable to get much ahead of the public in the general summing up, but three unusually bad days for the taleut at Gravesend put the layers more than comfortably on the profit side of the ledger. On this subject the New York Sun quotes one of the biggest bookmakers at the track as follows: Last Monday the ring won 00,000 ou the day. That is to say the big ring with 150 layers. Cowen alone cleaned up 5,000 in that day, while even the smaller operators, such as the non-members In the front line, won all the way from ,000 to 0,000 each ou the day. It was a remarkable bit of business, but it was surpassed on Friday when nearly 00,000 was won by the layers on the six races. Cowen was 0,000 winner alone. Tyler cleaned up 0,000, while George Rose, Lichten-stein. Boles, and others were from 0,000 to 5,000 to ,the good. On Saturday it is not exaggerating it a particle to say that the ring won 00,000. The sheets will show the business beyond a doubt. With 150 layers, an average winning for all three days of 0,000 each would not he impossible by any means. Anybody who tries to deny that there is more betting at the track now than ever before is not on the level with the public. The volume of business is enormous. Cowen was a tremendous loser up to the middle of the Belmont Park meeting, bis losses footing up to nearly 40,000. But he has got it all back in the last ten days. I know of another handler of big money who was ,000 to the bad up to a week ago yesterday. These are facts and they can be backed up with real live figures."
