BEDFORD WINS THE SPRINT AT LATONIA. Steeplechase Is a Farce as a Race Backed Horses Fall or Run Out of the Course. Cincinnati, O., June 2S. A good track at Latonia today brought about new conditions, since for the past two weeks the horses have for the -most part been racing in the mud and speculators were pretty much at sea in their efforts to select the winners. The card was a good one and with clear, warm weather the attendance was large. Calculations were badly upset in the six furlongs condition race, which called out the best field of the afternoon. Speculators pinned their faith to Hazelthorpe with Austin up, backing her confidently. Clvill thought Orlys class might carry him through and backed him moderately. The paddock contingent fancied John L. Inglls and Bedford as most likely to contend with the favorite. It was practically a one-horse race, for Bedford, getting away well, outran the others from start to finish, while Hazelthorpe had all she could do to withstand the challenge of Orly In the last sixteenth. Bedford pulled up quite lame In front. The steeplechase was a farce. Dunning, Stoddard and Pirate were well hacked, but all of them likewise War Chief, came to grief. St. Euoch, Frank Me and Stoddard were the only horses to finish. Dunning fell at the fourth jump and War Chief stumbled over him. The riders, McClain and ONeill, luckily escaped injury. Stoddard and Pirate both ran out of the course. Garlc took Stoddard back to where lie ran out, but was unseated while going to the next obstacle. He remounted, however, and and went over the course in the time limit, getting third place. Congressman Rhinock arrived from Washington this morning ami was a visitor at the track. Jockey B. Miller was hastily summoned today to New York, where his father is lying dangerously 111. F. Bruhus is reported critically 111. Jockey E. Morrison is making a strenuous effort to U allowed to ride. Judge Macfarlau, however, will not give Ids sanction until Morrison gets a release from his contract held by Wayne Joplin. Jockey Caylor was lined 5 by the starter for disobedience at the. post. Fncle Henry was hid up 00 over his entered price of 00 by Captain Buulmry, his former owner, hut was retained.
