WINNERS OF THE SURF STAKES. The Surf Stakes, which was run off at Sheepshead Bay yesterday afternoon, is one of the events established in the first racing program of the Coney Island Jockey Club and, while not the most valua.ilp, has always been popular and esteemed desirable by owners. In its first running in 1880 it was carried off by the splendid Leamington lillv Spinaway. in her day Splnaway was as highly regarded as were Tanya, Tradition and Artful two vears ago. Perhaps the best of the Surf winners was Dwyer Bros. Irenmnt. There is no telling bow good this son of Virgil was. He started in thirteen races as a two-year-old and won. thirteen. It was usually a case of Trenicnt first and the others far back in a hard light for eeoml money. Unfortunately, he went wrong and did not race after his two-year-old career. Other winners of high class were Portland. Sallie McClelland, Keenan, Hastings and Watercolor. The present distance of the race Is five and a half furlongs on the Futurity Course and, in winning yesterday, Peter Pan equalled the record Tor the race, made by Flexible In 190;;.
