STABLE ROOM IS SCARCE AT SARATOGA. Town Is Rapidly Filling Up With Visitors The "Lid" Is Off Great Season Is Promised. Saratoga, N. Y., August 4. Saratoga is rapidly filling up with visitors, horsemen and turf followers predominating. Then thousand is a conservative estimate of todays arrivals. Stable room Is at a premium in the town and country side generally. The supply at the racecourse was exhausted ten days ago. Richard Canfield has reconsidered his intention of shutting up shop Sunday. The magnificent clubhouse and restaurant will re-open tonight. He made that surprising announcement this morning. It Indicates a sudden change of base by the political dictators, due doubtless to the mass meeting of liotel keeiwrs, merchants and other business men, protesting against the clamping down of the obnoxious "lid." Racing conditions all over the country are such as will insure to Saratoga a season of unexampled prosperity. The influx of westerners alone insures its success. They are cutting a big figure on the eastern turf this year. Everything at the Spa is in readiness for the twenty-two days meeting and an armv of owners, trainers, jockeys and bookmakers are on the ground. The track proper is lightning fast and experts predict that existing records will go by the boards. There are no horses on the sick list. Secretary Earlocker of the Saratoga Association, arrived yesterday and was immediately besieged by applicants for boxes. All were turned down. Every box. having been sold before he left New York. Harry Stevens will as usual conduct the track-restaurant.
