When a few years back Dick Welles himself hung Up a record of 1:11 i at Washington Park, the feat qaused a sensation in tnrf circles. It was something without precedent then. Yet, up to date this year. 1:1." lias been beaten thirty-one times, and the Dick Welles record has twice been equalled. This has not evoked any great amount of comment, hut is quietly accepted as satisfactory evidence that the horses of today are as fast, at least, as the fastest of years passed away. Diamond, always notably a fast horse, but cursed with, a vile temper, felt on good terms with himself at Toronto one day last spring, May 24, took the lead at once and setting the,, pace throughput, ran six. furlongs In 1:111 and. defeated such fast onqs as Dishabille, Martin Doyle, La Pucelle and tliree others.
