DE MUND IS HIMSELF AGAIN. RAINEYS COLT WINS UNITED STATES HOTEL STAKES IN A CANTER. Use of Blinkers Shown to Have Been a Mistake Go Between Takes Saratoga Cup Sir Huon Unfit Herculoids Beverwyck. Saratoga, N. Y., August 25. Twenty thousand people saw De Mund win the United States Hotel Stakes of 0,000 today from some of the best or his own age. He did it with such astounding ease as to completely rehabilitate himself with the army of racegoers who had, after his marvelous trial of a half mile in 40 seconds last May, acclaimed him the fastest thing that ever stood on four feet. It was merely an exercise gallop for the strapping youngster to show his heels to the company opposed to him today and experts predict that the horse that beats him will win the Futurity. It did not dawn upon the critics until after todays effort that De Munds improved running might wholly or partly be attributed to the disuse of his customary head adornment. Under the old conditions, when wearing blinkers, Baineys so-called gold brick invariably failed to stay and was forthwith condemned as a counterfeit. In his last two races without them he has struggled on with rare courage, hence the deduction. As a matter of fact De Mund ran his races In his trials early in the season and, with a long let-up, has regained his normal speed and stamina. There was a surplus of 40 in the United States Hotel Stakes and the Saratoga Association was not called upon to contribute a cent towards the purse. Only three horses started In the Saratoga Cup of ,500, at one mile and three-quarters. These were the celebrated Go Between, the western Derby winner. Sir Huon, and Samson, a selling plater. The layers held K. B. Thomas candidate at prohibitive odds, the market sagging badly on Longs colt owing to his alarming preliminary canter in which he positively staggered a furlong In fourteen seconds, pulling up very sore. As the race was run, however, he should have won. The opinion prevailed generally that even half fit Sir Huon could hardly have lost in view of Go Betweens own unexpectedly poor showing. Go Between stumbled repeatedly in the race and midway of the stretch, with Shaw hard at work on him, appeared hopelessly beatep. Yet he got up to win quite handily right a the end because his younger opponent was palpably unlit and only a wraith of his former vigorous self. As a spectacle the Saratoga Cup was satisfying. In other respects, it was one of the poorest in Its long history. There now exists a well developed suspicion as to Go Betweens unsoundness. Of the three stakes that adorned todays splendid card, the Beverwyck Steeplechase over the full course, provided the most exciting sport. From the start almost, a duel was on between Herculoid and Phantom, botli at the top of their form, with the result in doubt almost to the last stride. Herculoid. since the retirement of Good and Plenty, Is believed to be the best crosscountry horse of the season and his victory today confirmed that Impression. The vast throng good naturedly applauded Nat Rays efforts on Phantom, notwithstanding that the. winner carried a majority of their wagers. Phantom was backed for thousands of dollars by a select few. aiore money it is alleged was wagered on his chances than has ever been forthcoming for a juniper in the history of steeplechaslng. Barney Schrelber scored his first success at the present meeting with Nealon, which won the first race at six furlongs ill ridiculously easy fashion. Schrelber had a substantial wager at lucrative odds on his good Sain colt, which will show to even better advantage over a longer route. Ostrich made his debut in the selling plater class br vanquishing a big list of opponents at a mile In the fifth race. He was ridden by .Miller to the most popular victory of the day. J. L. McCinnls boosted the Sexton horse from ,000 to ,500 and secured lltm- . . .1. R. Keenes Grlmaldi was expected to live up to Ills private reputation on his second appearance and was backed accordingly. Conville, wearing blinkers for the first time, easily disposed of the Disguise colts pretensions, incidentally enriching his trainer, J. E. Madden, to the extent of many thousands of dollars. The race was at six furlongs and Grlmaldi barely saved second place from Ellisons Yankee Girl. Jockey McDanlel was suspended for the meeting by the starter. Zambesi worked a wonderful trial on Thursday and Jimmy Rowe is authority for the statement that this colt will be Mr. Keenes chief reliance for the Futurity.
