XATONIAS BIG CROWD SEES GREAT SPORT. Jlicol Rides Four Winners Bookmakers Are Hard Hit Devout Wins the Handicap, Cincinnati, O., Angust 25. There was a big crowd at Latoula today and they saw some of the best racing of the entire meeting. Each of the seven races produced spirited contests and close finishes with the exception of the sixth, in which Mansard won easily. The handicap was a struggle from start to finish. The victory of Liberty Mo in the opening number, backed from 50 to 30 to 1, started the sport off in sensational style. But after this upset speculators found little difficulty in locating the horses that finished in the money and practically all of the books had a losing day. NIcols four victories out of four mounts Bonart, Devout, Friction and Postman put the chalk markers to the bad, as the crowd as a rule follows Nlcol blindly. Scoville and Aubuchou, the riders of Triumphant and Mildrene In the second race, claimed foul, Au-bttchon against Bonart and Scoville against Mildrene. There was no serious Interference In the race and both claims were disallowed. Goldblatt and his friends backed Mildrene, believing that the filly could take the measure of Dunnes colt. She needs a strong rider. Jockey Preston met with a mishap at the start of the handicap. Whlppoorwlll refused to break and the assistant starter could not Induce him to go on after his company. Instead he ran into the fence and Preston was thrown to the Infield. When the boy came to he limped across the track to the judges Stand. His leg was bruised, but lie was not badly hurt. Whipiroorwill ran away a mile before he was caught. Alma Dufour was the favorite for the handicap, but she was not iu any great demand until a small ratable commission showed about post time. Then Ibe price was shaded a half point to 2 to 1. Why Devout with Nlcol as pilot, should have gone to the post at 7 to 1, is puzzling, as this good performer liad recently shown that he was rounding Into form. He received a masterly ride, Nicol taking him to the front and tiptoeing his company from end to end. He was tiring at the finish, but won comfortably enough. The finish In the race in which Liberty Mo landed the purse, was a very close one between the first three. It was a good ride by Boland that gave the decision to Liberty Mo. This greatly Improved rider could have won with either Falkland, which was second, or Miladl Love, which finished in third position. Falkland was probably best and with a stronger boy up than Rice, he would have won. The performance of Friction was more than creditable. This game colt carried 115 pounds, conceded big weight to a speedy lot, stood the hardest sort of a drive and won entirely on his courage. Demo, which sufTered most by the roughing and interference In the second race, and which was third, was claimed by C. Heifers for 00. Mose Goldblatt will ship his horses to Douglas Park tomorrow. With the consignment will travel the horses belonging to W. E. Walsh. Edward Corrigan, accompanied by jockeys Buchanan and Daly, left tonight for Chicago to try out Mr. Corrlgans band of yearlings now stabled at Hawthorne. Jockey Mclntyre was 111 today and his engagements were canceled.
