POSSIBILITIES OF NEXT SATURDAYS GREAT FUTURITY RACE. The decision of the Futurity of 1006 is near at hand and the tall: of selecting the winner of the richest American stake for two-year-olds is now engrossing the attention of eastern followers of the turf: The Futurity of this year had an original nomination of 1,109 mares, of which the entry of 340 proved void; of the produce 332 were declared at 0 each; 156 at 0 each: 104 at 1906.sh0 each, and forty-eight at 0 each. This leaves 139 colts and fillies eligible to start, of which eighty-six must pay 50 to start or 00 forfeit, and fifty-three must pay 70 to start or 20 forfeit. From ail this it appears that the net sum which will go to the winner of the big race next Saturday will be 4,900. If the owner of the winner is also its breeder he will receive ,000 more. The gross total of the forfeits and added money is 1,000. The sum derived from the starting fee of 50 for each starter cuts no figure so far as the winner is concerned, since the second horse takes two-thirds of it and the third horse the remaining third. There have been much richer Futuritvs than that of this year, but at that, no owner lucky enough to take a share of the spoils will grumble on that account. There is no Sysonby or Artful to scare owners this year and it seems probable that twenty or more youngsters will be sent to the post. It seems to be conceded that the Keene entry will be the favorite. Had not Horace E. been beaten at Saratoga and Water Pearl gone amiss this would not be the case. As matters mnv stand Peter Pans magnificent performance in winning the three-quarters of ithe Hopeful Stakes in l:12i, with 130 pounds up; is of too recent occurrence to be overlooked, and will rightfully give him and his running mate, or mates, the favorites pride of place. In all Mr. Keene has Ballot, Peter Pan, Zanibesi, Griuiajdl and Pope Joan in to represent him aml: it is obvious that he has a great chance to win his third Futurity, he having taken the big race with Domino in 1S93, and Chacornac in 1S99. Still a race is not over until It; Is run, and it may very easily happen that the . formidable, appearing Keene candidates will all be soundly beaten as they all have been already in other races. In a table of Tinte-post odds issued a few weeks back. Water Pearl and Horace E. were each quoted at 3 to 1 as favorites. An accident pnt Water Pearl In retirement. This left Horace E. the logical favorite on the basis of his magnificent record in California and at Memphis. Having no other engagement he wa3 bought in the hope that he might win the Futurity. His only race since changing ownership was at Saratoga, where he started In a purse race; ran a fast-half mile; quit as if unfit, and was beaten by youngsters be far outclasses. He was then entered against a band of crack sprinters and scratched. It was given out that he had gone lame from bruising a frog on a stone and would not be able to start in the Futurity. Later it was announced that the Injury was superficial, that Horace E. was all right and a sure starter In the Futurity, ne was forthwith shipped to Sheeps-head Bay to be given a careful preparation and is probably by this time as fit as fit can be. The whole business of his career. If such it can be called, at Saratoga bears out all the earmarks of a bit of track politics designed to depose him from favoritism and create a good rate of odds iii the Shecpshead Bay ring. It can be pretty safely assumed that he will be a hard horse to beat next Saturday afternoon. In whining the United States Hotel Stakes yesterday, De Mund regained much of the reputation he possessed earlier in the year nnd it is probable he was unjustly and too hastily pronounced a counterfeit when he trained off temporarily. There is no question of this colts great speed and he stayed out his three-quarters yesterday in gallant fashion with full weight up, and now becomes a highly important factor. Between him and Horace E. the two Ralneys are now decidedly in the front rank of owners aspiring to Futurity honors, and 110 one w:ould begrudge one or the other winning. Oran Classes with the colts mentioned. He Was expected to be raced at Saratoga but forfeited his engagements, although reported to be working well and In good form. Mr. Mac"donough does not raco his horses severely and. having won the Futurity with a son of Ormonde last year, is naturally keenly desirous of winning it with a grandson tliis year. It is more than probable .that Oran has been carefully pointed with this end in view. So far as public form goes the foregoing are the pick of those that now seem likely to race. Jack Atkin is claimed by his1 owner to be as good as any of them, but is reported to be unabje to fill his engagement. McCarter is a good and improving colt and; on his late form, to be labelled dangerous. Charles Edward Was at one time supposed to be one of the cracks of the year. Dick Finnell and Old Honesty were sent .east, especially to run in the Futurity. The former is a full brother to Dick Welles and prt Wells, has started but once and showed nothing, but is reported to be a good one. Old Honesty ran well in the west and Indifferently at Saratoga. Kentucky Beau is very fast, but I1I3 last race was bad. Electioneer Is more than useful and so are Conville and Yankee Gun. Dally Racing Form presents its readers with a tabulation showing- the ownership "and" perfftftuances of the youngsters deemed most likely to run. The performances are up to Friday and do not include the races of De Mund and Conville yesterday. Pau-monok and Aletheuo have run well without. winning, and the estimated time given as their best performance Is carefully computed. In the case of the others their last time at three-quarters, or the distance nearest at which they have won Is given, together with the weight carried and other particulars of interest. Of course, there are a number of ellgibles that have never started, but so far rumor has credited none of them with superior excellence. lOwners. and Horses. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Dlst. Time. Wt.
