The mighty Roseben finally succumbed to 150 pounds weight on his back and staggered home with his huge burden behind the lightly-weighted Comedienne in the opening sprint at Gravesend today. The large crowd which came down to the track, attracted by the prospect of seeing Rosebeu and Lady Amelia, respectively the king and queen of American sprinters measure strides over their favorite distance, were greatly disappointed oyer the withdrawal of the latter and it is supposed that the public criticism, engendered by the scratching of the Thomas mare and the apparent disposition to dodge one another shown by both owners for the last couple of seasons, has resulted in what is practically a match race between the two champions. This important race was arranged by P. J. Dwyer tills afternoon and will be decided at Gravesend a week from tomorrow Thursday. The association will add 500. Weights carried will be 12C on Roseben and 123 on Lady Amelia. The distance about six furlongs, good day and fast track. Todays card was of more than average merit.
