SAM HOFFHEIMER JUMPS AT THE DOWNS. Heavy Rain Keeps Down Attendance Public Picks the Winners Dr. Rowell Going to California. Louisville, Ky., September 19. With the exception of the steeplechase, todays racing was mediocre and elicited little enthusiasm from spectators. Speculation, however, was up to the usual standard and bettors were lucky to land on most of the winners. Sam Hoffheimer showed himself to be more than an ordinary "lepper" by his impressive performance In the steeplechase. He led by a wide margin, after disposing of Evander in the flrst round of the lield, and won as his rider elected. A heavy rain fall during the morning hours kept the attendance to small numbers at the commencement of the races, but gradually increased in proportion as the afternoon progressed. H. E. Rowell will ship his entire stable to Cali- foruia in the next few days. Dr. Rowell will handle, in addition to his own string, a dozen or more horses, now yearlings, for President T. II. Williams, of the California Jockey Club. J. H. Robertson and W. S. .Laird have arrived from Windsor with their horses. They are In quarters at Douglas Park. Jockey Moreland is the latest addition to the riding brigade. He got here this morning from the Canadian tracks.
