LOST HIS FORTUNE ON BOARD OF TRADE. The death of L. W. Benson, at Louisville, Ky,, Sunday last marks the passing of an old time turfman who was a familiar figure for a number of years on western tracks. Racegoers will remember him best as the owner of David, a- frequent winner, and the fast sprinter Hobart. In addition to the above pair, Mr. Benson at different times owned and raced Wekota, Trix and Spluola. The dead horseman leaves a wife and two sons who are living in their home at McQuon, Illinois. At one time Mr. Benson was considered wealthy, but reverses la speculation reduced him to straitened circumstances., James Arthur, who was once his racing partner, defrayed the expenses of his last Illness and his burial. It Is said that Mr. Benson lost 0,000 ou the Chicago Board of Trade during the early 80b. His only horse Rian, the live-year-old bay gelding, by Riley Agnes IV., will be sold by auction In the paddock at Churchill Downs, and the money will be sent to Mrs. Benson.
